repost: If you could change your career

If you could change your career tomorrow to something that does not require any more school, what would you change your career to?  Stay at home mom is out.  Not because I don't want to do it, but it isn't financially feasible for our family.

Side story if interested:  I'm a teacher, teaching a non academic course.  The other day I was throwing around the idea (in my head) of changing careers if they cut my position at the end of the year.  (There just aren't many other open positions for non academic teachers right now.)  The only thing is, I'm having a hard time figuring out what the heck I would do.  We can't afford for me to go back to school, and yet again, I have no idea what I would study.  Ugh.

Re: repost: If you could change your career

  • I would like to run a non-profit for something that I'm passionate about (not sure what the cause would be, maybe dog related?).

I like to cook, but I don't think I would want to be a chef or baker since the hours suck.

  • Every job I've had, I've kindof stumbled into.  But, looking back, I can see that they all have similar things in common which more or less add up to project management.  So if I were changing careers, I'd look for something where I could use those skills but also be a little more creative or more focused on the parts of my job that I like the most.

I know that's pretty vague, but maybe it will help you focus on what you like/what you're best at/what other jobs would have those attributes?

  • I would like to run a small bakery. I love to bake! But I would never have the guts to try it.
  • I feel like I am in the same boat.  I was a teacher before we moved here and couldn't find a job.  Now, I don't know what to do!  I thought I would teach forever and really can't seem to get my mind around the change.  I would love to do non profit or baking/cooking, too!  I've considered going back to school too, but I have no idea what to study or if I'd even like it.  I hated school when I graduated, but I loved being a teacher.
  • I also love crafty things, but I don't do a ton of them for myself because of time/money. I briefly opened up an Etsy shop this year and had fun with it for about 2 weeks before I got burnt out. If I was able to devote the time and energy to make that my real job I think I could do really well with it.
  • I would love to work at an aquarium swimming with dolphins and the like.

Or working in a lab doing disease research, growing things on petri dishes.
