where in DC should I get married (again)?

Hi! Sorry to be so totally AWOL from this board. I need to put it in my favorites or something to remind me to check it. I miss all of you I knew from the old days!

Annnnnyway...

We're getting legally married on 11/11 (DW loved the number play... how could I say no?). We already had the big fancy wedding (in 2008), so this time around it will just be the pastor, our 19-month-old twins, and maybe a friend or two. We're looking to do it as inexpensively as possible ($3k a month for daycare is killing us!), so no big hall rentals or anything. Free would be great! Also, I think we should plan to do it indoors or in a sheltered location in case the weather is crappy.

We are planning to hire a photographer to record it, and also (hopefully) get some good posed pics we can use for our Christmas cards, so it'd be nice if it were either in a pretty location or a walkable distance from one. The primary constraint is that it has to be within the DC city limits.

Any ideas? I'm completely stumped!

  • I was at a picnic last week at brookside gardens in Wheaton, md and there was a small wedding going on in a gazebo right next to a pond. It is outdoors you have the gazebo as shelter you can get great pictures. It isn't in DC but its not too far away.

Thanks for the suggestion (love Brookside!), but unfortunately it HAS to be within DC to be legal.

  • You can get married at the WWI Memorial on the Mall, which is set off the side and most people don't realize it is there. All it would cost you is $50 for the permit.

ETA: Scratch that, you can get married there, but it's currently under construction, so weddings are off for the time being. You can still get married on the west lawn of the Jefferson Memorial and the George Mason Memorial, but neither of those is covered.

  • If it was a nice day, you could do the National Arboretum. Inside, can you look into renting a private room at a restaurant you both like? I think some of them don't charge if you meet certain food/drink minimums.

    ETA: congrats, btw!

  • Free or low-cost and indoors in DC is a tough one. I always thought it would be amazing to get married at the Jefferson Memorial. It's obviously outdoors, but if you have a short ceremony and then retreat to a restaurant, it could work.

  • THis is not a traditional wedding setting, but we just had a party at Local 16 (16th and U).  http://localsixteen.com/index.php

We rented out the whole upstairs for the night (from 7pm on) and the minimum we needed to meet was $600!!!

It has huge beautiful windows and  you could very easily do a ceremony there and the reception.  We did not have tables up there.  Not sure if they have them or not.  We had an open bar and the bar was up there with us.

  • I don't have any ideas unfortunately, but I wanted to say welcome back! And that I'm so happy for you that you are finally able to make your marriage legal! :)

  • I was just thinking about this for another couple I know who are also doing it again to make it legal - right now they're at pick a restaurant and reserve a banquet room - have the ceremony and the "reception" all in one place.

    Congrats to you!!!
