Hey LA lady!  I have a quick question for you. I've gotten an offer from an ad agency today - I love the agency, clients and people and it would be a great setup, but the office is in Newport Beach.  Would I be an absolute crazy person to take the job and commute from West Hollywood to OC every day?  I hate to turn it down because I know the market isn't great right now...

TIA!

Now jumping domestically.

Well that was a crazy couple of years.

I grew up in LA.  Personally, I think that would be a rough commute.  It's about 50 miles one way, and I remember how bad the 101 can get.

My brother used to commute from San Bernardino to Newport Beach, and it would routinely take him more than 2 hours to get home (his record was 6 hours one night).

Just my $.02.  I would consider it too in a tight job market.

  • I have no advice, except I've done the 2 hour each way commute thing. It was very hard for me.  Good luck in whatever you decide. I hope you and Eli are having a great time being in LA

  • Derek's commute is about 45 miles across one of the busiest highways in North America and he hates it.  His average commute is about an hour and a half but can easily take 2-3 hours.

Some say that the traffic through Toronto is worse than LA, but maybe that's us just feeling bad for ourselves.

I will say, however, that what gets him through most drives staying sane is audiobooks.  Our subscription to Audible is very worth the money.

We'll just not tell H about this little fact, m'kay?

  • If you do make the drive, Sirius XM saved me. :) I love listening to the talk shows, audio books and jamming to music. Now my DH makes a 30 minute commute, not as long, but he listens to TED talks.

  • Thanks ladies!  If I do take it I'll definitely invest in audiobooks or sirius... I'm planning on asking them if I can eventually work from home a couple of days a week so I don't have to do the commute every day.  If they're completely against it, I don't think I'll take it but I'll be really bummed to turn it down!  There must be a more sane option out there though.

  • Sorry I'm late but here's what I think. The drive from WeHo to OC would be along the 101 to the 5 which are two of the worst freeways in LA outside the 405. I used to commute on the 5 and it was a 45 minute drive until I found an alternate route. I still take it home and it's sometimes a one hour drive. Keep in mind that in terms of miles my commute is probably less than half of what yours would be each way. I personally hate my commute and I know I could never do what you're considering. However, if you could work from home twice a week, three times a week might be manageable. Maybe one morning you can make the drive during the morning rush hour to see what you'd be in for. Also, have you considered taking the red line into Union station and then the Amtrak to the OC? It would still be a long ways but you could save your sanity and get some rest instead of driving each way. Good luck whatever you decide. Welcome to LA my dear!
