Houston Zoo

We're planning to take DD to the Houston zoo next Wed. morning.  This is the first time we've been in probably 8-9 years.  Is there anything in particular we should look for.  Katelyn loves animals but she's only 2y/o so I'm not sure if there are things she will enjoy more than others.  Since we only have about 2 hours (it will be nap time), I want to make sure we get to everything she's going to like and avoid all the boring parts.  TIA!

Re: Houston Zoo

  • We go to the zoo about once a week, I usually have a set route: sea lions, then meerkats, then elephants, then through the bear/cats to the African Forest, chimps, rhinos and giraffes ending at the Children's Zoo for some play time, we walk by the flamingos/duck lake on our way out.

  • I don't think it's ever taken us longer than 2 hrs to see the whole Zoo...of course I don't stand and gawk at the animals for long.  lol

  • We've gone a few times since DS was 18 months.  He loves it.  The first trip, we went to the Children's area first, and after that it was so hot we didn't last much longer.  Plus, to go through the Africa exhibit you have to go the other way.

Now, we head inside and go left and hit up the meerkats, then elephants and over to toward the Africa Exhibit.  DS doesn't get much out of the monkeys but he LOVES the gorillas.  He thinks they are monkeys.  We'll go to the giraffe next and then the Children's area.  That usually takes 2 hours.  We have a membership, so I don't worry about not seeing it all - we've only seen the lions/tigers once.

  • The aquarium is right at the entrance, Katelyn should like that.  It's always our first stop when we go to the zoo.
  • We're there weekly as well.  We go aquarium (if it's not busy), then across to the indoor exhibit in front of the meerkats, meerkats, elephants, past the reptile house and stop in and just see the orangutangs in the big monkey exhibit.  Then we walk past the lions to the African Forest and come out by the giraffes.  I always try to end at the giraffes around 11 a.m. so Marion can feed them.

I usually skip the children's zoo and we just walk past the flamingos & hoofed stock on the way out.

  • Katelyn's favorite animal is the giraffe so I would love if she got the opportunity to feed them.  I'm sure she'll want to stay at the petting zoo for a while as well.

  • I try to avoid the children's area like the plague. I freaking hate the nasty goats. They give me the heebie jeebies. And I hate that they want to play on the playground, which is not that different from a million other playgrounds that I don't have to drive across town to see.

But I do usually buy carousel tickets at the main gate because there's no avoiding that if you're going to see the giraffes.

If you don't want to pay to feed the giraffes but still want to see them, walk through the restaurant and stand on the restaurant patio so you can actually see them at feeding time.

My kids really love the aquarium, the natural encounters building (the inside part by the meerkats), and the tropical bird house.

  • Speaking of the Africa exhibit - we were there last weekend and one of the chimps had a very large thing - looked like a giant sac of 'roid - hanging from his rear.  Has anyone seen this?  What is it?  It is like the size of a big ball and it looks painful.

this is our exact route too.  The carousel is in the African Forest too.
