Republicans

Ok, continuing the political talk from below. What about Huntsman. I was reading up on him and I like him. He's moderate and level-headed, which could sway a lot of independents and disillusioned liberals to vote for him. Just a thought.

Re: Republicans

  • which is unfortunately why he is close to dropping out of the race, he has not gotten a lot of traction in the Republican polls(people don't like that he worked for Obama) and he had some ill timed and ill conceived commercials early on.

  • See, Amy, that's interesting to me. If the Republican really want to beat Obama they are going to have to nominate a moderate so that they can pull those crucial independent and disillusioned voters. Oh well.

I should have been more specific in saying the hard line Repulicans who vote in and seem to determine the primary candidate.  I think he would do well in a general election, but I doubt he will make it that far.  And until we get a national primary date--we get who we get in January as determined by a few hardline voters.(I know you live in Iowa and probably really enjoy your state's status but it does have a negative impact on elections IMO).

  • I had read an article on Huntsman sometime last fall and was really looking forward to what this candidacy might look like - but I agree, I don't think he's polarizing enough to make it to the national election. Which is really quite sad...

I agree.  Which is why I don't understand why so many hard line Republicans can't see it.  The American public is really disillusioned with Republicans (see: any pop culture reference regarding politics), so you'd think they'd try to stop fighting the losing battles and try to focus on the good of the country versus seeing this as an us vs. them thing.  So frustrating.

You know, as much as I enjoy all the attention Iowa gets and how spoiled we are by the politicians, I think the current system is crappy (I hope I don't get beat-up for saying this. HAHA!) Yes, Iowans take their jobs very seriously, but, like you said, we have some hardline voters that can really send the nomination process is a poor direction.
