I haven't posted on this board before but I figured it would be the best place to do so. I am currently in Okinawa, Japan and turns out my dress for the ball will not be arriving at all! I need help! Does anyone know any place off base where I can get one? I can't go anywhere too far from Kadena as I have a cast on my leg. I have looked in American Village and Gate 2 Street so far. Please advise.
Re: MC Ball Emergency!
I've only been in Oki once, but I lived in Misawa, which is much more of a podunk, but Japanese stores still carried some wearable stuff. Have you tried Parco or Loft? We didn't have them in my area, but I know I found some things there. They must have something formal. What about the department stores?
I can't remember the name of the store that had shiny sparkly stuff. I can picture it in town, and H bought a shirt to turn into a party shirt. They at least had cocktail dresses. H also bought stuff to wear to my sister's rehearsal dinner. Of course, you have to have the confidence to wear something kind of Japanese and not exactly mainstream American.
Or, find a friend you can borrow from!
Oh, I couldn't give you any directions. Like I said, I was just in Oki once; I lived a 6 hour flight north of there.
I'm not 100% sure the chains I mentioned are there, but they're nationwide so I'd expect the possibility.
Isn't there a big Japanese mall nearby, in Naha? I could have sworn there was a mall with a lot of American and European brands. Someone has to know where it is. Even in my tiny town we could go to ITT and get maps for local restaurants and stores. They even had a map to Gap, 2 hours away.
How comfortable are you traveling by public transport? Can you read the 'kanas? Do you know some basic Japanese, like how to say "where is...."?
I would imagine there's some sort of bus, either through the base or ITT, to get you into Naha, at least to the airport. From there, I would imagine there's a public bus to each mall. If we had a bus in a town of 40,000, there has to be one where you are.
If you do the googling, I can help you navigate a little bit since I can read the 'kanas (if you can't, a few flash cards will have you reading it in about a month).
If neither of you have a car, how do you get around off base? Do you have friends who would drive? Maybe there would be a spouse group wanting to go on a shopping trip. Because Misawa was so isolated, there were ITT trips to the mall in Sendai, and that was 4 hours away. I'm sure you could find something. Good luck.
Right outside gate 2 on KAB are two stores - Chandelier Boutique and Demure. Both stores will have gowns and have articles on Okinawa Hai with directions. There are also tons of ladies regularly selling on the local yard sales site.
My guess from her BNOTB post is that she does not. He's on unaccompanied orders and she states she doesn't have a job.
OP, not trying to make you feel unwelcome or be snarky, just stating what I've read. Please look into my post above before you attempt to leave Japan on an expired VISA.
