big house for 2?
My husband and I put an offer in for a house on Sunday. It is a great deal (foreclosure) and the house is huge. We have no kids right now, though we are working on it! This house had 4 bedrooms (actually could make 5).
Did any of you or are any of you buying a house that seemed (seems) incredibly large for you at the time? I am trying to see it as a great house for us to grow into, as I would think we'd be at this house for a long long time.

At 1850 sf, our house isn't particularly huge, but it's definitely more than the two of us need. 4 bedrooms, a living room + family room, full basement, dining room + eat in kitchen... but we'll eventually grow into it.
So far it's been three years living there with just two people. It's fine.
Yes, our house is large for just the two of us - 2500 square feet with 4 bd/4ba.
We actually use all of the space.
We're planning 2-3 kids in the future so it won't seem as large once they come along. I wanted a house large enough that if we couldn't move for some reason, we'd be OK staying put for 30 years.
*eta* our space breakdown:
main level:
living room, kitchen open to dining room, powder room. People hang out here and I like to read by the fireplace.
upstairs:
3 bedrooms, master bathroom, guest bathroom. One bedroom is ours (obv), one is a guest room that gets used a couple times a month and one is the exercise room with some equipment, a TV, radio and DVD player that used to be just for looks but I started working out last week.
lower level:
bedroom, family room, full bathroom. We use the very large bedroom down there as a shared office, the family room is H's movie/game/media space and the bathroom is for when people don't want to go upstairs and we use the tub in there when the dog needs a bath. lol.
Our house seemed enormous to us when we first moved in (coming from a 600-sq. ft. one-bedroom lake cottage). It's 1263 square feet: a 1901 foursquare with a full basement and walkup attic not included in the square footage. 3 beds, 1 large bathroom. Between the two of us, our 2 big dogs, and our 3 cats, it doesn't feel so big anymore
If it's what you want, get it. Most people would prefer more room to less (though I don't think I'm those people). And if you plan to grow into it, then definitely go for it!

We have a 4 bedroom home and no children. The house is about 2,400 sf. We use one for DH's office, one for a guestroom (queen bed) and one for my office/reading room/extra guest room (futon/twin bed). We have a large family with most out of town so we really enjoy the space when they come visit.
I grew up in an apartment with 8 people so now that we can afford it, I like my space, lol.
We bought a house with approx 3400 square feet, 4 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, finished basement, etc when we had just gotten married.
We now have two babies (a 2 year old and a 4 month old) and the house feels too small.
Who knew that toys and baby items took up so much space?
Our previous home was 4 bedrooms (two master suites) and a total of about 4500 sqft. It was just us but we knew we would have a child and once we did, 1 bedroom was ours, 1 bedroom his, 1 bedroom a playroom, and 1 guestroom. No longer that big.
The house we are building is 5 dedicated bedrooms with a playroom separate that could be a 6th bedroom. That is a family of 3 but again, we plan to have more kids and we like having the space.
Buy whatever house you want, as long as you can afford it.
We have a 4200 SF house (5 bedrooms) for 2 people and a dog. Some people think we're crazy, but we love our house. The people who owned our house before us didn't have kids either, just 2 adults and 2 dogs, so we didn't think it was unreasonable to buy a family sized house for 2 people.
We had lived in a 925 SF condo previously and were so cramped there that we went a little overboard when buying a house since we never wanted to feel cramped again! We wanted a house that we could stay in forever and never grow out of. We do actually use the whole house so it's not like we have extra rooms that we never go in. We only use 3 of the 5 bedrooms as bedrooms - one is an office/library and one is my craft/sewing room. Plus, we have family staying with us quite often and it's great to be able to accommodate them comfortably with multiple guest bedrooms.

We have a 3700 sf 5bd/3ba house for just the two of us. I just redid 2 of the bedrooms for me. One room is a retreat area and the other I made into a dressing room with both a large makeup table and another table for doing my hair. So nice to have the extra space!
Our last house was 5 BR and we bought it before kids. We only have one child and are not having anymore and we just moved out of state. We just bought another 5 BR home.
Just to throw in a different perspective, we bought big the first time around and while we loved our house, it was way too big for us (2600 sq ft) and a lot of it went unused and just felt like a hassle to clean and keep up with. We had an entire separate living quarters (2 beds, bath, den, living room and laundry) that was completely empty -- we didn't even use it for storage!
When we relocated closer to family 2 years ago we went overboard in the other direction and bought a teeny 625 sq ft home! While ideally we'd probably like to be somewhere in the middle (there are 3 of us +2 big dogs) we're comfortably inhabiting our right-sized home and will probably stay here another 3-5 years.

We went from a 1200 sq ft townhouse to a 3K square foot house, with an additional 1500 SF of finished basement.
It seemed huge when we moved in. One kid later, I feel like we are filling it up and couldn't image going any smaller. I even want a 3rd car garage!
Just understand with bigger homes comes bigger tax bills, bigger utility bills, bigger upkeep bills. With large properties comes large maintenance costs.
If you want to be practical, look for a home that has good size rooms for the ones you will most likely use the most (family room, bedroom, kitchen,etc). Skip homes with wasted space like huge entry foyers,etc. Also high ceilings will increase your utility bills.
I feel it's worth getting something you can grow into if you can afford it. If you buy another stepping stone, with the current market, it will probably cost you money to move again in 5 yrs.
