I had a phone screen with a recruiter and when she asked me what salary I was looking for, I gave her the minimum amount I would accept because I didn't want to miss out on the opportunity for asking for too much.
If the position is offered to me at the amount I stated, should I still try to negotiate for a higher amount?
I hate negotiating but I don't want to sell myself short!
Re: Negotiating Salary
I was told by a good friend in HR that you should ALWAYS negotiate. That at a lot of companies, the HR person handles everything and they often start at the low end of the salary range because most people never negotiate.
That being said, just because you ask for it, doesn't mean you'll get it. Sometimes the HR person isn't handling your case, sometimes it's your possible-supervisor. In that case, what attracted them to you might have been the price tag. I tried to negotiate higher pay at my current job to cover the difference in the benefit contribution as my previous job required very little from the employees (though it was a mostly deductible based care and my current insurance is MUCH better). I didn't get it, but they didn't take away my offer either. I asked, they said no but that I could be eligible for a raise once the salary freeze was over. 1 year later, it is and I am!
Whenever I've been asked about salary, I was told by an experienced CEO to always answer with "I'm open for dicussion about this.". He said to make them give the first number because your salary range may be completely different from what they had in mind. His marketing dept. one time hired someone at about $15,000 less than what they had planned on offering because that person said that is what he would work for.
