Recs for OB in Center City
Hi ladies,
I just found out I am pregnant and I am unsure where would be a good place to deliver.
I have heard good things about Pennsylvania Hospital Penn Care for Women and also Lankenau Hospital.
Any recommendations, or experiences you can share with either of these? I guess Penn would be easier because I live in CC but I hear they have a lot of shared rooms which is a bit off putting.
Also I have no idea how this works - is it worth picking a specific OB at the hospital, or do they just assign you someone?
It's all a bit confusing for a first timer - any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

You could also try asking on the local Bump board if you don't get too many responses here.
Congratulations!
Ditto Women's Medical Specialties and TJUH. I have since moved out of the city so I don't go there anymore (now at Lankenau) but Dr. Wolf delivered both of my kids and she was fantastic. Also the nurses and LC's at TJUH were awesome. GL!

I go to Penn Care for Women (in the curtis center) and delivered at Pennsylvania. I know they're still in the process of renovating their rooms, so there's a good chance they'll all be done by the time you deliver. I don't know anyone else's experience here, but I dont know anyone who actually roomed with another person. I was in a double room, but I was by myself. One thing that was really important to us (that I didn't know I would need until I delivered) is the NICU at Pennsy is a level III which is the highest/specialized level of care you can get. Our son had lung issues when he was born and the doctors and nurses there were amazing (they're all CHOP doctors).
I do not have any children or have ever been pregnant, but I just started seeing Dr. Paige at PA Hospital at the recommendation of a few others on this board. I really liked her and would feel very comfortable delivering with her practice and at PA Hospital. I have heard a lot of good things about PA Hospital. Good luck!
Just adding my two cents.
I was a University of Penn patient for the longest time. Switched to their office in Univ City from the 'burbs and had a terrible time with the office side of things - waiting forever for appointments, being scheduled for an annual 6 months after I was due for one, and insurance mix ups.
I switched to a private practice that delivered at Pennsylvania Hospital at 8th and Spruce. They're known as the "baby hospital". I give my experience a B, had one mediocre nurse, had one great nurse, and don't recommend my OB but don't recommend against him. Just wish I had a different experience (which is why I'm not listing him here). But Pennsy is a great option for CC-dwellers.
I also spent a short stint (1-2 yrs) with a specialist at Jefferson and loved my experience, FWIW. But it wasn't for baby-stuff. GL!
I am one of the few who had a bad Pennsy experience.
For whatever reason, this time last year, every woman in Philadelphia had a baby there. Yes, women were in active labor in triage when I was there. Yes, every bed on my floor was full - including the doubles.
I think the laborist system sucks a duck. In my case, there was zero communication between laborist teams - I had three of them. At one point, I had to practically scream at a resident that she could not do a particular induction procedure because my water had broke. She didn't believe me, because no one told her. She was sure I was mistaken.
I had a horrible day nurse, and their lactation consultants were awful. Every two hours someone new came in and told me something else - nipple shield, no nipple shield, pump, don't pump. The nurses and LCs regularly contradicted each other, which I expected. However, my son was very jaundice, and I needed actual medical advice that pertained to him - not someone pushing an agenda who didn't look at his chart.
All of that being said, I will probably go back if for no other reason than the fact my pedi is there, and we could see him and not an ever rotating staff of house physicians. We followed his lead, including hooking up with his lactation consultant, and got through the jaundice and are still breastfeeding today.
Hmm, this does not sound good. Especially for someone who basically has no clue what they are doing! I would have no clue if someone was trying to do a procedure they shouldn't.
I've made an appointment with both so I have a little more time to try and figure it out. I think I'm leaning towards Lankenau at this point, but still torn. I'm tempted to take the Pennsylvania Hospital appointment and see how it goes. If I get a bad feeling, maybe I can switch at that point?
Funny this probably isn't a huge decision in the great scheme of things, but it feels huge now. Possibly because I'm trying to put off thinking about all the other stuff.
'The burbs' as in Lankenau was ok, or somewhere else?
Bryn mawr. Here's the thing I was at the birth center had an unplanned csection at the hospital. If i knew I was going to be spending 4 days extra I would have preferred somewhere closer. Also as much as I loved my midwives, the practice who did my csection were a bunch of wankers.
Also I love your board name.
Yes, I have heard nothing good about the laborist system. It doesn't make much sense to me. I work for Penn but choose to go to Lankenau. Actually, one of the docs at my practice came from Pennsy because he didn't like the laborist system.
I should say I was not one of these people who needed to know the doctor delivering my baby or anything. I had super low expectations of the laborist system - just that someone would read my chart, run the show, direct the merry team of nurses, residents and fellows, and would clearly communicate to whoever took over for them. They epically failed at all of it.
