Anyone have a safe?

We want to get a safe to keep some important documents and stuff, well, safe. Do you have a safe? How big is it, where did you get it, etc? TIA!

Re: Anyone have a safe?

  • We have a safe like this, It holds most of our major documents,(passports, BC, MC, SSC). DH had it when we met, but I think you can get them at like Staples or office depot.

  • I pretty sure this is the same safe we have. If not it is very similar and I am quite sure we got ours at Home Depot. HTH!

  • We have something very similar to Nezwee.  I wanted something I could grab (or H could grab ha) in the event of a fire with all critical papers in it.

  • I really think we want one, but DH thinks I'm crazy. I also want to get an alarm system but he doesn't want to because he thinks it will take away from the "look" of the house.

  • We have one like this and we have all out important documents, gift cards, DVDs of photos and other stuff in there.  It's not bolted down so we don't keep valuables in it, just stuff we don't want to burn in a fire.
  • We have a smaller one, but it's still heavy.
  • We have one similar to newzee to keep important papers in. I wanted something that locked and was portable. Also, it is fire proof. We bought it at Target.

  • We will soon have 2 safes--one that we have now is pretty small and fits in our closet.  We got it from walmart if I am not mistaken.  It holds jewelry not worn, IMPORTANT papers, and things like that.  DH is getting a gun safe this weekend for the obvious and that one will be pretty big and stay in the back part of our basement.

  • Thanks for the suggestions! I'm not sure if we should get a big heavy one or just a box. We aren't planning to keep money or fabulous jewels in it, just docs (SS cards, passports, birth certificates, etc) and wedding DVDs.

  • Just to note, the one we have is pretty heavy. I can lift it with a bit of a struggle.

We have one just like this, it's just a tad bigger. We had a smaller one but there was more that we needed to keep safe in the event of a fire so we got the bigger one.

  • We have a small one, slightly larger than a shoe box.  We got it as a wedding gift, but I am fairly certain I have seen similar item at Target.

We keep it under the sofa, which would be on our way to the main exit of the house from our bedroom.  It has things like passports, SS cards and an external harddrive with wedding and baby pictures, so all things we'd want to grab and go if we had too.

I have also heard that you can use a deep freezer..  They almost always survive a fire.  Just put the docs in a plastic baggie.

  • We have one, maybe the size of a carry on suitcase.  It is fire and water proof and is good for keeping our computer backups and documents.

Ditto this.  I also keep some DVDs of pictures in there (though I'm grossly behind).

  • I was looking into fire safes for awhile there, but my Mom has a safe deposit box that I have access to, so I'm going to start making electronic backups of all of our important documents and photos, and storing them in her safe deposit box. I'll like knowing that it's stored outside of our home in a worst-case scenario.
