Renting HUGE vent

So we rent our duplex right now.  It's super cheap rent so our expectations are incredibly high...

Around Wednesday last week our washer stopped working.  It wouldn't spin.  No big deal - the landlord arranged to have a new one delivered to us.  He has a buddy who owns a used appliance store so his buddy's store delivered a new washer on Monday.

Everything was going great when the delivery guys left.  They let it run a cycle to make sure it was working.  No problems.  I leave for work about 45 minutes later and have a load going in the washer (at this point our laundry was so backed up I just wanted to get a jump start).  Dh comes home a couple hours later and the carpet is wet around the laundry room.

I call the landlord and they are going to send someone out from his buddy's company to fix it.  The come out the next day and basically say that the hose system that was there is at fault so they can't do anything about it.  The problem is that we never had any issues with the previous washer and they used the hoses from the previous washer.  So how come if it's the hoses' fault that it's just now starting to happen??

So landlord sends out a "plumber/handyman" friend to try to fix it since the appliance company wouldn't.  The friend gets it to where it wouldn't leak...ran a cycle before he left - no water (this was yesterday).  Dh comes home last night and starts doing laundry.  First 2 loads - no water.  Then little by little it starts leaking again....it was a small enough amount that he just left a towel near where it was coming out at and kept doing laundry.  I call the landlord and let him know.

Today a different guy from the appliance company comes to take another look.  After about 5 minutes of messing with it - I hear water literally rushing in the walls of the laundry room.  There is water all over our kitchen floor and a good 4x8 foot area in the bedroom behind the laundry room.  It's an absolute mess and it took the guy what felt like forever to find the water shut off.  I feel like a dummy because I had no clue where it was.

So right now appliance guy is using a carpet cleaner type deal to clean up all the water and a plumber is coming out at 5:30 tonight to fix the pipes, etc in the wall.

It has been an absolute mess.  I'm so frustrated.  I understand that we don't pay a whole lot in rent so our landlord is trying to get things done as cheaply as possible.  He has a ton of friends with side businesses as handymen who he relies on for this sort of thing.  But, how about after like the 2nd mess up that we call an actual plumber so it doesn't escalate to puddles and puddles of water in our house.

If you have made it this far.  THANKS!  Oh, did I mention that our landlord is my ex-stepfather??  We have a great relationship and it's all good, but I'm questioning his landlording (word?? lol) abilities at this point.

  • That is sketch landlording. I mean I get that he's trying to do it on the cheap but a flooded townhouse is going to be a lot more expensive to fix than a broken hose/washer!
    Happiest place on Earth!

Seriously - and to say nothing of the fact that you're kinda sorta family.    I mean I totally get swapping in a new one and thinking you're done but when other things start happening and those things are WATER LEAKAGE I mean that's a potentially huge expense if not handled correctly.

Exactly!  It's so frustrating.  Dh is livid, but only biitches to me about it.  It's like, "yeah dude was my stepfather for a long long time, but you have just as much say in our housing situation as I do.  Talk to him about it too."

  • Oh my.  I'm sure you guys are beyond furious, as you should be.  Has anything of yours been damaged by the leaks?

I hate when people half-ass things over and over until it reaches the point where it would have been less expensive  to do it right the first time.

I really hope he gets this straightened out for you before anything worse happens.

ITA.  Wouldn't a professional have at least known to turn off the water BEFORE working on something like this?  Now he's going to have to deal with drying it out, and possible mold issues down the line.  Can you say Ka-ching.  Would have been much easier to pay a "real" plumber more money, that way at least if they had screwed up he could sue the plumbing company for repairs.

I get that its hard to complain with the familial tie and the cheap rent, but come ON...this is inexcusable.  Its not like you guys will be living there forever!
