If you have a cleaning lady come in...
We have someone (finally!) starting next week. 2 stupid questions:
-What do you do with your pets? Our dog pretty much has free roam of the downstairs during the day (and she hasn't been crated in about 3 years). Do I really need to invest in a new crate, or is there another option I'm not thinking of? We don't really have a "spare" room to put her in that we don't need cleaned, except the laundry room in the basement which just seems cruel to leave her there all day!
-How do you let her in? I was just going to give them a key, but DH isn't comfortable with this. I don't want to just hide a key outside- to me that's more risky than just giving one person a key.

I would ask your cleaning lady about the dog. My mom always let her dogs run around when the cleaning lady was there and we let the cat wander around too. They naturally tend to hide somewhere though.
My cleaning lady comes about 8/8:30, so I just leave the door unlocked when I leave and she locks it up when she goes.

Our cats were always just out and about, and we warned them that one cat likes to try to slip out the front door, so we asked them to be watchful. The paperwork we signed did cover pets and they asked that any potentially disagreeable or difficult pets be locked up. If we'd needed to, we probably would have kept animals in the office. It's the least-used room in the house and the one that requires the least amount of cleaning, so having the cleaning folks skip it wouldn't have been a huge deal.
I agree with Kathryn - ask the person you're hiring what their policy is on dogs. If they're fine with it and you have no reason to suspect that your dog will be a problem for them, I'd just leave him out. He'll probably stay well out of their way.
We gave the cleaning service a key. DH wasn't keen on the idea, but I'd rather it be in the hands of a licensed-and-bonded company (of two-three people - it was a very small service, which appealed to us) than hidden in my yard where potentially anyone could find it if they looked enough.
We leave our dog out. She met him before she started cleaning our place and she likes dog so it was fine. He doesn't really bother her.
She has a key. She cleans our neighbors house and has for years so we felt comfortable giving her a key. We have an alarm that we just don't set on the day she comes.
We have a dog and we do crate him during the day - although when the weather is mild (like it is now) we will put him in the garage on a long leash so he can still run around when he wants. But in the summer and winter we do put him in his crate on the days the house is cleaned. (Keep in mind we have a French Bulldog - and that is not a very active breed so he is fne with sleeping in a cage all day)
As far as getting access to the house, we have a keypad on our garage door. If you have a garage, that's something you might want to consider. It's fairly inexpensive to have one installed and its easy to change the code at any time.
I used to clean for my moms business. Most people just let their dogs run free. We had 1 or 2 who would lock them up.
Almost everyone gave us a key or garage code. There was 1 lady that was just always home so we didnt have hers. If you are uncomfortable giving them a key then why are you comfortable enough letting them clean your home? Another reason to give them a key is because she may be there are different times depending on traffic and the other houses that day and it is hard to wait around.
Ditto.... anyway that watches our cats or cleans, we give them a unique code for our garage and alarm code. This way they don't have any keys to our house. Our cats usually hide from the person, so we just leave them out.
