Pertussis vaccine for DH question

Hey girls.

So you probably remember my trouble when I got the pertussis vaccine and had to wait four weeks to start TTC.  Do they tell males to wait a certain amount of time?  Coud it effect sperm? I can't find anything on the internet. DH has not yet gotten the vaccine and we are TTC.  I don't want to have to wait another four weeks. His brother and SIL are due in December and are insisting anyone around the baby gets the vaccine.  DH wanted to get it last week and I told him no b.c. I don't want to wait anymore time.  Maybe I should tell him to wait until closer to December, but he is insisting on getting it all of the sudden.  Does anyone know? I am going to tell DH if they say we have to wait to not get it.  We won't see the baby till Christmas time anyway.

Re: Pertussis vaccine for DH question

  • I tried to edit my above post but the edit won't show up.  I found some info (on the internet) that said it wouldn't effect the baby if the father got the vaccine, but that website (OTIS-Organization of Teratology Information Specialists) also said the female doesn't have to wait after being vaccinated.  Hmmm.
  • Honestly, I would contact a doctor's office to ask these questions.  Good luck with this and TTC!

I agree with Melissa- since I got pregnant I have learned not to depend too much on internet! Good Luck on TTC

  • My guess is that it would be totally fine if he got the Tdap right now.   The big issue with you getting it so early is that 1. you build up your immunity to it so you don't get it & pass it along to the baby either pre or post delivery and 2. that you aren't actively trying to build up your immunity when you are in your first trimester.

Don't know why the above is bolded & I can't make it normal- weird :)

From the CDC.   Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis (Tdap)
    • Pregnancy is not a contraindication for use of Tdap. Data on safety, immunogenicity and the outcomes of pregnancy are not available for pregnant women who receive Tdap. When Tdap is administered during pregnancy, transplacental maternal antibodies might protect the infant against pertussis in early life. They also could interfere with the infant's immune response to infant doses of DTaP, and leave the infant less well protected against pertussis. 11
    • ACIP recommends Td when tetanus and diphtheria protection is required during pregnancy. In some situations*, healthcare providers can choose to administer Tdap instead of Td to add protection against pertussis. When Td or Tdap is administered during pregnancy, the second or third trimester is preferred. 11
    • Providers who choose to administer Tdap to pregnant women should discuss the lack of data with the pregnant women and are encouraged to report Tdap administrations regardless of the trimester, to the appropriate manufacturer's pregnancy registry: for Boostrix? to GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals at 1-888-825-5249, or for Adacel?, to sanofi pasteur at 800-822-2463. 11

      * Situations with increased risk for pertussis: Healthcare providers can choose to administer Tdap instead of Td to protect against pertussis in pregnant adolescents for routine or "catch-up" vaccination because the incidence of pertussis is high among adolescents, in pregnant healthcare personnel and child care providers to prevent transmission to infants younger than 12 months of age and to other vulnerable persons, and in pregnant women employed in an institution or living in a community with increased pertussis activity. 11
  • I got the pertussis vaccine in August, and my doctor knew I was TTC at the time and she never said anything about me having to wait 4 weeks or anything. I don't know if my DH got one, I think he might have though. I'd say your best bet is to call your doctor.

  • Thanks.  I will try and call my doctor tomorrow.  Although she said nothing about waiting to TTC after I got the vaccine.  I am going to tell DH if they tell him to wait four weeks to not get it.  He can always get it when his brother and SIL have the baby or closer to the due date.  I am just paranoid now since my experience with it.  I don't have much free time to call the doctor during the day and they always want to call me back and I am not always in my office and don't have my cell on me.  I can have them leave a message though.
  • I really doubt that it will affect DH's sperm, I think it's more of a concern because the baby is 100% dependent on the mother for nutrition/growth, etc. and the 1st trimester is so critical to development.

But I would definitely contact your Dr. because there is probably tons of info online and who knows what's true and what's not.
