Freelance work

I've been an in-house proofreader for 5 years and am looking at leaving my position and doing freelance work instead. Except, I don't know where to begin. Any tips/advice??

Re: Freelance work

  • Recruiters! Are you on LinkedIn? I use the search engine to find ones in my industry and let them know I'm interested in contract work. I'd also upload my resume to the "major" sites (Monster, Indeed, etc) and indicate that your preference is freelance/contract work. Honestly, it seems like most of the jobs out there right now are temp/freelance since the economy is in the dumps and companies don't want to pay for permanent employees. When they ask you for your hourly rate, It should be higher than what you were making as a permanent employee to account for the lack of benefits. GL!
  • Try Media Bistro and the Morning Coffee (google it - it has another name). Both sites post job listing for editors including freelance positions.
