I cant do a push up!! Need help!

I am trying to get fit before I leave for boot camp and my only problem is I cannot do a push up. I am not worried about any of the other physical tests just the push ups. I have never done one in my life. I have been lifting weights for about two weeks now but I feel that its not enough.

If you are a woman in the military please tell me what you did to prepare physically for the push up portion of the test.

  • I am not in the military, but I have been working out again recently to get my strength back. I would suggest starting with a modified pushup until you feel stronger. It will let your muscles get used to the movement without putting your entire bodyweight on your arms right away. Build from what you can do and it will start to get easier! Keep at it every day and you will start to see progress!

  • Triceps, biceps, and back are what I'll be working hard on, though not for pushups . Have someone watch you to make sure you're in proper form so you don't get harassed too much.
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.

Modified push up? Like the "girlie" kind on my knees? I can do those :) Just not a lot before my arms get tired. I will try that. Thanks!

Thank you!! I will work on those specifically instead of random arm workouts.

Proper form :( I hope I do them right in boot camp. I don't want to be yelled at more than I have to.

  • This is like a c25k program for pushups.

Since I've never made it past a week in either program, I can't speak for their efficacy.

You SHOULD be doing pt in the dep program and it will help you in the long run. If you arent then I suggest doing actual pushups to get better at them. In BCT your instructors will walk you through what they want you to do step by step, but perfecting your form ahead of time will help.

  • Just keep doing the push ups, the reps will begin to get easier, and then you can do more of them. Try doing one regular push up. If you can do it, do another one. When you absolutely cannot do regular push ups, switch to the "girl" ones.

     Good luck!

  • I could do 10 pushups when I went to Basic.  By the time I finished, I was maxing them out in my PT test.  You just have to keep doing them.  When you get to the point that you don't think you can do another one, hold tight in the front leaning rest position until your arms shake and you are about to bust your face on the floor.  You will start to build up strength in your arms.  Waiting until you are just about to leave really isn't the time to start trying.  Lifting weights will help you a bit, but nothing helps more than actually doing it.  You need to be able to at least do a few before you leave.  Don't be that chick.  Get out with the DEPers and start working out.

Remember, you're going to get yelled at no matter how many you can do. Don't take it personally.

  • Thanks for the advice!

I am going into the Navy. I am definatley not waiting till last minute. I don't leave for boot camp till next April.

I wish I could work out with the other DEPer's but they only have it once a day at night and we only have one car that my husband uses to take to work. He work night shift and I have to stay home to take care of our son. Plus it doesnt help that they do the workout at a park 40 minutes away.

  • Talk to your recruiter.  If you can't work out with the DEPers, they can give you a website to go to or a paper with a work out routine on it that will help you get ready.

  • Check out this instruction it's for the Navy's PRT program it will help you see what a proper push up is and how many you have to do for your age.

Very much the bolded. I'm not in the military, but a while ago I got really tired of not having really any upper body strength. I found that doing them every morning (religiously!) and gradually adding onto the sets worked really well. Time, patience and dedication.

I agree completely with the bolded part above. Youjust have to keep pushing yourself. If you take a break then you will mess up your rythem

  • I am really weird and I literally could not do one push-up.  Not after MONTHS of training. I could do lots of the girlie ones, and not a single one on my feet. I'd get to almost 90 degrees and fall through every time.

What worked for me was having my H spot me with a towel around my chest, standing over me holding the ends. He would pull on the towel as little as needed so that I did the max weight that I could. I did them like that, with his help and still not being able to do one, for about 3 months. Then all of a sudden I could do one, then 5, then 15, and now I can do 15 well and I am getting to 20. They came in really quickly once they started. I also did them so that my nose touched the ground to be sure I was going down far enough.
