...my veins suck! When I talked to my OB in April, she ordered blood work because I told her we would probably start TTC before my next annual. It was to check to see if I had the Rubella vaccine in my blood, and if I had the Cystic Fibrosis gene. If I have the CF gene, then DH needs to get tested because if we both have it, our kids will have a 25% chance of getting it, and then we'd have to look into what treatment and all of that is and whatnot.
well, I have really really tiny veins, and they can't take it from the inside of my elbow. They tried for 10 minutes to "slap" my veins so they were bigger before putting my hand under warm water for a good 3 minutes. They ended up taking it from the side of my wrist (not the underside), after trying from the inside of my right elbow.
It makes me wonder what it's going to be like when I'm KU and go into labor/they have to give me an IV and stuff. ugh. Seriously, every time I go, it takes them forever to figure out what to do.
end vent. thanks for listening
Re: vent: I had blood drawn today..
I'm not sure, but I know what you mean! I'm sorry getting blood drawn was so tough for you
. I have a pretty serious phobia of getting blood drawn due to having an IV put into my PALM as a child, so I understand how frustrating/freaky it can be...I've just recently stopped panicking when I have to get it done. Now I just almost pass out!
It'll probably be a PITA when you go into labor, but I'll bet there's so much else going on/you'll be waiting very impatiently to meet your adorable LO that it won't matter to you! Plus you'll have been dealing with the same doctors/nurses for 9 months, and hopefully they'll have come up with a good blood-drawing plan by then!

I'm sorry, that blows. Hopefully they'll find a good spot in the future and then every time you need blood drawn you can tell the nurse where to go.
And this is the part where I brag about how awesome my veins are - I always get compliments when I go to get blood drawn. It's almost a shame I don't to drugs, they're so awesome.

ditto. I give blood frequently because it's easy for me. I seriously straighten my arm and the vein pops out lol.
I'm not sure how much this helps but drinking a lot of water keeps your veins healthy, they retain their shape and don't collapse when people start poking at them. It won't make them bigger but they'll be healthier.
Drinking water definitely helps. If you have to fast and not drink anything before a blood draw, make sure you're very well-hydrated before you start the fast.

I started drinking lots of water about 48 hours before hand :-(
I should drink more in general though...
