My MIL told me that if a child attends a private kindergarten that public schools will not allow them to start the 1st grade. She said they would have to go to a private school for 1st grade and then public school will accept them.
Is this true?

Re: kindergarten question
That is sort of true only if age is a factor.
Abbie has a 9/26 birthday but was moved up in preschool. She could have started a private Kindergarten when she was 4 (about to turn 5) but would have had to do private 1st too and then could have gone to public 2nd.
Her other option was to go to private kindergarten then public kindergarten and then 1st, etc.
We decided to send her to a private school instead where they allow you to test in early for Kindergarten.

This is my understanding. Going into public kindergarten only depends on age. If your kiddo does private kinder a year early then no they cannot go into public 1st grade, because they are too young, not because they went to private kinder.
: ) I went to private kinder and public first grade.
I will say that it was somewhat crazy the first month or so. I don't know if they put me in the lowest classes by default, but I was moved through math and reading classes like a little vagabond for the first several weeks as they got to know more about my skill level in first grade. I went through 3 different reading teachers and 3 different math teachers before i finally kind of settled into where i was supposed to be.
this was back at one of the open-concept cy-fair schools where we changed areas/teachers for reading, math, homeroom, PE, science, and art/music.

These statements exactly.
