Topic of the Day

Since this is getting all kinds of peeps riled up on Facebook today:

STUDENTS SUSPENDED AFTER SCAVENGER HUNT

http://www.ketv.com/news/29607343/detail.html

Thoughts?  Agree? Disagree? with either the punishment or the fact that it was apparently 'unacted on', or whatever they said.  Big deal? No Big Deal?

Re: Topic of the Day

  • Wait was the list at school? B/c we did a scavenger hunt my senior year during our last week. So if it was part of a school activity then I could see them getting in trouble - even though I don't know if suspension is the right punishment.

But if kids were doing this outside of school then I don't think it's right. I think they should have just sent a letter to parents or called them and let them deal with it. It is f'd up though some of the things that were on the list.

I think it's funny they were suspended from practice, but of course they'll be playing the game tonight! Even if that was the right punishment it's funny how schools always try to keep the players in the game.

  • Mixed feelings on this one.

First, I need to know if the adults in this situation, (coaches) new about this scavenger hunt AND what was on that list, and condoned it.  If so, I think they should be punished as some of the items on there were pretty 'un-Christian like' in my opinion...'get a raunchy sex toy', 'take a picture with a topless girl', 'take a picture of a fat/ugly chick', get a girl to give you a DD bra...gross.

Second, I don't believe for a second that 'nothing was acted on' as far as that list..obviously this girl stated they came and asked her for a picture, so they were doing the list...they may not have gotten very far.

In the end I think the punishment was pretty 'laize faire'...I don't think they should have been expelled, but I'm sure they could care less if they had to sit out a few practices...I've been to a few football practices in my life...that is not a punishment to sit out..more like a relief.

Regardless, as a mom of boys, I would be very disappointed in this was one of my kids.  Yes, it's all fun and games, but some of the things on that list, like I mentioned above, in my opionion, distasteful and not necessary to have fun.

Altimatetly I think it's the parents responsibility to deside whether or not they think it's worthing of a diciplinary action above what the school did.  If it were me, my son would be sitting his ass next to me in the stands watching the game from there.  It's a teaching moment IMO, and especially in a Catholic school, I think it's an oppotunity to show your child what you expect of them as a good Christian.

The list was brought to the school's attention after a Dr. John's employee found it and notifyed the school. Here is the initial article from the World Herald

I think kids to stupid things regardless of what school they go to. It is silly to me it made the news.

ETA: That said, if I were the mother of one of those boys, I would be livid. But it wouldn't have anything to do with the school that I would be mad. There would be some major consequences for my kid.

It was in violation of Prep's code of conduct, and the things on the list were disgusting and I think there should have been some consquence in school because of that. They also faced in school suspension. I think expulsion would be too severe.

Under the OWH article there are all sorts of comments about Prep students, their reputation, etc. My DH went to Prep and while some of the students might fit the stereotype of "haughty and snotty," I can assure everyone that that is indeed not all of the boys there.
