I'm asking on here because the national board seems to be all about running.
I've been doing 5 days a week at the gym. MWF is weights/some cardio (elliptical, bike, whatever) and TTH zumba, weekends off. I'm a complete idiot when it comes to working out, because I'm 30 and have never done it before. They told me to take a day between weight training. I'm doing activtrax, if anyone knows what that is.
Anyways, my Thursday zumba class got cancelled. They have one Fridays, but I'm not sure if I want to do weights two days in a row. They have some other classes, but I don't think I'm ready for turbo kick. (Okay, I know I'm not. I did dance aerobics and thought I was going to die last week.)
What to do? Do I need to take the day off? Any other advice for a newbie?
Re: Fitness ladies
I would take the day off or do some type of cardio like a run on the treadmill or something.
I'm doing the New Rules of Fitness for women and they are very strict on recovery time and taking 48 hours to rest due to the harm it can do to your muscles to lift back to back.
I do a warm up run on weight days and if I workout in between (T/TH like your schedule) I'll go for a longer run or do some kickboxing.
Really? This is very strange to me. Every weightlifting program/training program I've ever done requires back to back. Typically some kind of 2 days on, 1 day rest or 3 days on, 1 day rest program. I wouldn't do the same stuff, but I do whole body lifts (not isolated stuff) so I'm working everything consistently. But, I'm also more of a powerlifter (trying to increase strength significantly, etc.) so it may just be the nature of my working out, if that makes sense.
Dill-I would do something! Even something like 30 day shred (Jillian Michaels) would be perfect and get your whole body in motion like you do in Zumba.

Ok, first of all, woot on that weight loss, lady! You rock!
Regarding weights - I've always heard to not lift the same muscle group two days in a row to give your muscles adequate time to recover. So lifting 2 days in a row is fine, but do back and arms one day, legs and core the next, etc. I don't know what the lifting program you mentioned is, so I can't speak to that. That being said, I don't think lifting two days in a row every now and then is going to kill you. Maybe just don't make it your routine, kwim?
I agree with this as well. Separate the muscle groups if you want to do back to back days.
Or you could just do some more intense cardio on your own on Thursdays? Like get on the treadmill and do intervals - like run for a minute, walk 2 minutes and repeat. Intervals burn a crap-ton of calories.
I was going to say the same thing, cardio on your own with HIIT? Don't count yourself out of turbo kick, just go at your own pace. Give it a shot!

I was assuming you're doing a full body workout since they told you to take a day off. I've never heard to lift the same muscle groups back to back though. Your muscle fibers breakdown after you workout and they need time to heal. You get stronger that way!
