Driving Questions

1.  If someone (or lots of someones) start using the shoulder as a lane for miles because traffic is backed up, do you plant your car in the middle of both to keep people from doing that?

2.  Do you ever flash your lights to warn drivers of an upcoming speed trap?

-- People were using the shoulder for miles down Hwy 6 this morning. It infuriated me, but I didn't block the shoulder b/c most of them were HS kids and I didn't want to be hit.  I was praying that there was a cop at the light handing out tickets.  There wasn't.  I was annoyed.

-- I don't flash because I am afraid I will get busted by another cop...I do appreciate when others give a head's up though.

    1. No.  I would be afraid of getting hit.  I would be really pissed off though.

    2. I have never heard of that before.

  • 1. I never do but I dream of doing so. Like you, I'm afraid I'll get hit.

    2. I've done this a couple of times on a little less trafficked roads -- like 71 into Austin, etc. Not usually on 59 or something.

  • 1. No, but I will try to block someone who is trying to cut in to a long line of traffic (think the 610 & 59 interchange), like ride pretty close to the person in front of me so they can't get in. Irks me.

    1. No.

  • 1.  Yes becuase I'm bitchy and they can wait like the rest of us.  Never been hit.

    2.  Yes.  I do it often on the Beltway.  I appreciate when others do it for me.

  • 1) I used to when I drove my big old truck, I was never afraid of getting hit in that thing, classic ford, it's built like a tank and is big enough to easily block two lanes.  Now in my little nissan with a kid in the car I fear getting hit.  I do still do it on the 59 - 610 interchange though, people cut by on the shoulder ALL the time there at rush hour and it makes me SO MAD.  They aren't usually going fast though.  And there is also a motorcycle cop who likes to sit there and write tickets. I <3 him.

    2) Like PP said, only on more rural roads or highways.  Not so much in the city, I think it would just confuse people.

Same for me on both 1 and 2.

    1. I do not plant my car because

    a) I fear that I would, in an emergency, not be able to get out of the way for an emergency vehicle (or a vehicle with an emergent situation inside... someone having a kidney stone, potty problems, in labor, etc) and

    b) it's not my job to be vigilante traffic enforcement lady and

    c) people who use the shoulder can be irrational, and i am too non-confrontational where irrational real life people are concerned to put myself in harm's way.

    2. I flash my lights and I appreciate when others do so... although I have to say, this has never actually saved me from speeding past a cop.

  • 1) Sometimes, just depends where I am and who if ds is in the car or not

    2) Sometimes, again depends on the road and traffic conditions

  • 1. Yes. I have also been known to hang my middle finger out the window and wave it wildly and give the other drive a stare down if DH is driving and won't block the lane. I've also yelled at people, although I try not to do that because I'm going to get shot one day for running my mouth. This is one of my biggest driving pet peeves and it makes me irrationally angry just to think about it. I don't understand why people think they, and their time, is so much more important than everyone else who is waiting their turn.

This has backfired on me recently (actually on the way to Harmony's house for Kid Rock). Hwy 6 was all backed up and scads of people who obviously thought they were more important than everyone else were driving up the shoulder. DH was driving and I was yelling out the window flipping people off. I flipped off an old man and gave him a stare down as he drove on the shoulder through a green light next to us. We happened to pull into Taco Cabana right behind him. He held the door open for me (felt like an @ss) and then commented on my I Love Detroit shirt. It was a very awkward 5 minutes in line.

    2. I have seen people do that before, but I never have. I'm always afraid of getting busted.

And then you purposely drank a bottle of Boone's Farm and all was well in the world again, right?

  • 1. DH does when he's really really annoyed with a situation - most often when motorcyclists are lane sharing or passing people on the HOV lane...which terrifies me that we'll be hit and said motorcyclists will be seriously injured. It's annoying and dangerous when people are driving/riding stupidly but, for the most part, I'd rather just stay out of their way and let them take their show on down the road rather than invite their hotheadedness into my world.

    2. DH (I cite his driving because we work & ride together so he's behind the wheel 99% of the time) rarely flashes for a speed trap - usually because he's going too fast himself to see a cop ahead of time. But he often flashes his lights to thank people for letting him over.

  • 1. Yes. Only time I have is when we were on I-10 evacuating for Ike and people were speeding past us and it was pissing us off.

    2. I haven't ever done it but i'm glad when others do.

  • when it's narrowing down by a lane and it's almost time to have to do it, I absolutely block both lanes.  If *I* have to wait, then you can wait F$C*ER!

if it's a shoulder, I probably would too... but the emergency vehicle bit scares me

I used to flash my lights but now, I have daytime running lights so...  they wouldn't see it.  but I would.

I think about it, but I don't.  People are stupid and I'd get hit.  I do really really hope they get a ticket, though.

    2.  Do you ever flash your lights to warn drivers of an upcoming speed trap?

No, but I will flash to warn them about a wreck or something.

    yep, me too.

  • 1. No, you can be ticketed for that.  So can the people riding along the shoulder, though.

    2. I always flash if I don't see another cop ahead to catch people on my side.  We leadfoots look out for each other.

  • 1.  If someone (or lots of someones) start using the shoulder as a lane for miles because traffic is backed up, do you plant your car in the middle of both to keep people from doing that? I have in the past, but only like once or twice. There is a motorcycle COP (yes, police officer) who rides the shoulder on 288 EVERY DAY around 7:15am to get around the traffic. THAT infuriates me. Seriously - I would get so mad every morning! A cop! GAH! I'm glad I don't go that way now! :)

    2.  Do you ever flash your lights to warn drivers of an upcoming speed trap? I have never heard of this.

  • 1. Confession: i'm one of those assholes that's probably driving on the shoulder

    2. I sometimes flash my lights on a smaller road if it's obvious a cop is setting up a speed trap.

  • 1,  Sorta.  I do this on Grand Parkway where it approaches I10 and the construction.  You can tell those that KNOW the 2 right lanes merge and think they are above waiting their turn.  I plant my big huge Tahoe right in both lanes.

    2.  Not really.
