Cable/Internet services are such a scheme

We've had Fios for a number of years now, and love it, but apparently our 2 year pricing is expiring and they want to jack it up by $10/mo (before equipment and taxes, etc). And that price is only good for a year at which time I'm sure they'll jack it up another $10.

I asked what alternative was available to us and was told to stay at the same price we pay now, we'll lose internet speed (I can live with that) plus a whole slew of channels. The kicker is they're advertising that SAME "lower" deal to new customers for $20 less a month!

Seriously, way to make me feel unappreciated for the past 5 years of business. I think I could even deal with losing some of those channels if I could pay $90/mo vs. $110. Has anyone ever successfully gotten the "new" customer rate after complaining enough?

  • I haven't gotten the "new" customer rate, but Comcast will reduce your rate or give you a promotional rate for a longer service period if you call and get the right rep.  Sometimes, the rep sucks, and you have to hang up and try again.  But, we do this every 6-12 months depending on when our rate increases and it works out fine.

At least you can get Fios?  Stupid Old Town is stuck with Comcast and no alternative.  Sad  If I didn't love our neighborhood so much Fios is almost worth moving for.

  • I would definitely try it.  The worst thing they can do is say no, and if they do that you can always threaten to take your business elsewhere and see what they do.

  • We got the same letter but our Verizon base price is going up to $129.99!  I think we're just going to switch to something else.  It pisses me off that they are advertising $89.99 for new customers with no contract.  We spend $4200 a year between our cable, internet and cell bills - they can go f- themselves as far as I'm concerned.

  • I did. I raised the $20 difference issue and said it seemed ridiculous and was told "it's just a promotional rate for new customers to try to get new business". Then when I said I'll have to call back after speaking to DH but we'll likely cancel our service and go elsewhere (we won't, but they don't know that) and she said "ok, have a nice day and thank you for calling verizon!"

    wtf.

This is a sucky service rep.  Try again with someone else.

I agree.  I don't have verizon, but with comcast, everytime our bill goes up I call and they lower it.  It's magic apparently, since they can't guarantee us that rate but can pro-rate us for that month plus another 6 months.

  • I'd try another rep as pp suggested, or ask to speak with a manager.  We just got Fios but when we had DirecTV they would usually honor the new promotional pricing (you just couldn't request changes more often than every 6 months).  Sometimes you have to extend your contract (or agree to a new contract) in order to give you the promotional pricing. I'd also mention that you know Comcast and DirecTV will honor new promotions for existing customers.

  • Before we moved, our rate went up and I called and complained.  They lowered it, then we moved and I put it in H's name so we got the new customer discount, haha.  You could always do that, if nothing else works!  But usually just calling and threatening to cancel gets them to lower your rate.
