Stupid Floridian needs advice on gas fireplace!

So it took me about an hour to figure out how to turn it on (sparks and pilot lights and two switches, and panels. Blegh!) anyways, I'm wondering if it's more cost effective to have this thing on, where me and the dogs are most of the time, or to have the regular gas heater heat the entire house.

  • I would keep the gas heater on a low temperature all the time.  When you are in the room, kick on the gas fireplace so that you are only heating up that room.

  • So, if you don't have gas logs (the nice ones that actually radiate heat) you might spend ore money running the gas in the fireplace. The heat (even from other rooms in your house) is pulled out the chimney. So if you actually want to heat that room efficiently, here may be a few options.... get some nice gas logs to go in your fireplace and close doors in your house so other rooms don't lose heat so fast (dont know if this really works, it just seems to for me) or you can use your gas fireplace until you get real logs lit which will prevent you from using a lot of gas. Also if you have a glass door on the fireplace, make sure to close it. Just some options. :) otherwise, just turn on your heater.
