Cloth vs. Disposable...(forgive me if this is already posted, first post about baby :-)
We are expecting our first in May and I am curious if there are any opinions on cloth vs. disposable diapers. Or does or don'ts :-)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Re: Cloth vs. Disposable...(forgive me if this is already posted, first post about baby :-)
A lot of the girls on here are cloth diapering and are very knowledgable on the topic. We did disposables with our first but are going to go the cloth route with this one. There is also a store, Top to Bottom Baby Boutique, here in Omaha, where they can show you anything and everything you want to know. They have diapering 101 classes also.
After lots of reading and talking with other moms that CD, I bought all Tots Bots. I did buy some prefolds and covers to use at daycare since that is what they wanted.
I'm sure others will give you more info (also check out the CDing board on the bump), but for us it was/is a cost, health and, somewhat, environmental issue.
The cost seems like a lot upfront, but IMO, doesn't even come close to what one will spend on disposables. Cloth can also be used for more than child and if you purchase "one-size (OS)" CDs, they grow with the kiddo so you're not having to constantly buy the next size up. Finally, CDs keep some value to them so you're always able to re-sale after you're done.
With our first kiddo, I was uber-concerned about all the chemicals and junk in everything so to me, it made sense to stay away from disposables. I've since lightened up a bit and while I try to avoid unnecessary chemicals, it's not a huge concern any longer.
All that said, we quit CDing around 18 months or so last time, mostly because the diapers developed a stink that I could NOT get out. That, coupled with the nasty poops, were enough and we went to disposables. This time (due with #2 in a few weeks), I don't plan to give up (as easily - lol!).
What she said.
We do disposables because being a working mom, I didn't want any more laundry to do each week.
I am actually using Target Up and Up diapers with DS. They don't have a chemical smell like pampers and seem a little longer up the back so less blowouts for us.

We have cloth diapered both our kids. We started when DD was about 6 months old, and lasted until she was around 16 month old, then we moved and ended up using disposables for a while when we were getting settled in. We ended up having some ammonia issues and only cloth diapered a few more months before we started potty training and moving to pull ups.
We started cd'ing DS when he was around 1 month old. We have pretty much exclusively cd since then, and haven't had any big issues yet. I use a different detergent now (Tide) and I think that helps a lot. I also use 1 cup of bleach once a month (when I remember).
We have a TON of diapers, but wash about every 2-3 days. We use a wetbag instead of a pail, because I think it helps keep the stink down, but many ladies on here prefer using pail. We used one with DD, and I wanted to barf every time I opened it.
I love cd'ing. A lot. However, I don't have poop issues like some have. My kid poops once a day and I can literally dump the whole thing into the toilet, so I am not dunking, swishing, rinsing, etc. The only time I have had to do that was when he was on an antibiotic.
We have saved a ton, and I think the diapers that we have would easily last us through another kid.
Good luck!
Yep. We use Up & Up diapers too. I've tried a lot and they are the best, and luckily also one of the cheapest.
I find CDing completely disgusting, personally. After seeing the sh!t that has come out of my kids ass, I could not imagine ever having to do anything else beyond wrapping it up and throwing it away. Everyone has their own thing, and I've known people that tried it and hated it, and obviously, others love it. If it's something that appeals to you, then buy a small amount, and give it a try! You can always buy some used ones to start so it's not a huge investment and then sell them if you decide you don't like it.
We did not CD our 1st probably because it wasn't as well known to us. By the time I was pregnant with our 2nd, I had went to a CD party that Jess from Top To Bottom was putting on and got a little exposure to the different kinds and how easy it really is. So I started buying diapers slowly and mostly they were used but in excellent condition. DH wasn't on board right away when I told him I wanted to do it. He had the image in his mind that constisted of prefolds, pins, and plastic pants. Ya know, the only way the old school did it. I had to show him how they have evolved and made sure to get ones that were easy for him. Once we started, he LOVED the TotsBots and actually requested I bought more. No problem since for a little while I had a diaper addiction and was getting fluffy mail a few times a week
I literally just got done switching over my diapers and putting some outside to sun the stains out. I hate seeing stains so any chance I get, i try to sun them out. I have more diapers than I need and could get away with doing laundry every 4 days or so but I have my favorites so I usually do them every 2-3 days. Because I am still nursing her, her poop isn't quite ploppable solids but honestly, i have no problem shaking it off or scraping it with a plastic knife because I hate thinking that it will leave a stain more the longer it's on there. Also, I think working in a hospital has ditched my poop fear, especially since it's my own child. I mean, what happens when your kid has a blowout or pukes on himself? You clean it up, right?
It's really easy to do IMO and the cost savings is HUGE! I don't feel like it takes hardly any more effort or time to CD vs. disposables. You just need to figure out what works best for you. TTBBB has a diaper rental package if you want to try that too.
I honestly think that my DD is a happier baby in cloth and don't miss the late night runs to the store for diapers either
Also, like PP said, they have a huge resale value. And since I bought most of mine at great used prices anyway, I imagine that I will pretty much only lose about 3-4 bucks a piece on them. Basically, i've probably spent close to $700 on buying used when new, they would have been almost 1k. Once I sell them, i'll probably get 50-75% of my money back as long as they are still in wonderful condition. So pretty much I will be spending lets say $350 vs. 2k they say is the average disposable cost!
