I have an interview tonight for general manager at a new frozen yogurt place. I worry that since it is a brand-new business (they opened 3 weeks ago), they won't be able to offer as much as, or more, than I am making now.
Do you think I will have any negotiating power if they offer me the job? I know they are paying their part-timers minimum wage.
I would take a comparable salary to what I am making now, because I know I could work there 3-5 years, and use that experience to land a higher paying job as a restaurant manager, but I can't afford to take less; the bills wouldn't get paid.
If they offer less, should I say "I really need to be making X in order to leave my current job, but my goal is to be making Y in 3-5 years" or something along those lines?

I think your statement to them would be fine. But you need to be willing to not take it if the pay is lower.

Oh I definitely would decline the offer if the pay is lower and they were not willing to negotiate. I like eating and paying rent.
I'm just trying to feel prepared. I've never negotiated before, and I want to know what I'm going to say if it comes to that. I don't like feeling caught off-guard. In my current and previous jobs, they have just told me "this is what you will be making," and since I was going into all of them as unemployed, I took anything they offered and did anything they asked. I'm no longer in that position.
On the plus side, I got a call on my lunch hour for an interview as an assistant manager at a very prestigious restaurant next Wednesday. So we'll see how it goes.
Well the interview went great. I found out that if I get the job, I will be overseeing the new store, as well as 2 more that they have planned for the metro area within the next year - year 1/2. I go in for a trial run tomorrow evening.
When they asked about salary, I told them ideally Y, though I understand things might be shaky with it being a brand new upstart, but I couldn't leave my job for less than I'm making now. They asked how much, and I rounded up a teensy bit.
Then they said "oh that would be no problem AT ALL, we would bounce you up from that."
They agreed way too easily. *sigh* If they make an offer, though, I still plan to try to negotiate higher, and definitely bring up the possibility of raises once the two new stores open and will be under my management. This is something I didn't know when they first asked about salary.
