my department recently merged with another and my workload has doubled. When I started, I was supposed to work on 1 project. A few weeks later that grew to 2 and now I've taken on another 4 so have 6 in total. I have been working so hard lately and much longer hours than I am supposed to in order to manage my new workload without any complaints. I love what I'm doing so I feel awkward asking for more money (and we're non profit) but I know my boss just got a raise for taking on this new department as well.
Another similar role was also advertised within the company at a higher salary and I would like to bring my salary up to line with that one or at least closer to it. I work part-time so will still take home less but with the extra work I've been doing, I feel I deserve it.
any ideas on how to present my case? I also am not sure if I should let my boss know I want to ask HR for a raise before doing so...
Re: best way to negotiate raise?
Why would you ask HR for a raise? Is that how it's normally done? I go through my boss.
I'd lay out all the tasks you've taken on, as well as accomplishments (which IMO are more important than the tasks themselves). State what you think you should be compensated, and have data to back up where you got that #.

Definitely go to your boss. Hopefully you have a good relationship with your boss that way you can be comfortable telling him/her that you deserve a raise.
But please do not mention or bring up the topic, "but boss, you got a raise" at all during the conversation. Just because your boss got a raise doesn't mean you deserve it. I'm not saying that's what you're thinking, but just be careful not to mention his/her raise in the conversation. If you bring it up, the boss may think that you're just pouting and asking for a raise only because of he/she got one.
I def wouldn't bring up the fact boss got a raise. The changes to my role took place 2 months ago so I was thinking for asking for a raise to go into place from January.
I guess it's complicated b/c they were going to close my dept (when I originally had 1 project) which my boss has no idea about but hr does which is why I was thinking of going to them. If my dept was closed, I was going to take the other role which was more $$ but also more work. I was in another role that dealt with more confidential matters which is why I know a lot of things my boss does not... including the salary for the other comparable role.
