I don't usually hang out here, so I apologize if this question is asked frequently...
My sister just started a job as a dental assistant this week. She started the day after her interview and would have accepted virtually any job offerred to her at this point as she had been searching for a quite a while.
She has yet to sign or see any paperwork in terms of benefits packages, compensation, vacation, etc. This seems crazy to me as I would never accept a position without knowing what the pay and benefits would entail.
Is this normal in the working world? I'm concerned that she's being taken advantage of and legal protocol on behalf of the employer isn't happening. But - I've never switched jobs, and when I signed with my firm, I had all the information up front before signing the contract and that's all I know.
Thanks ladies!
Re: Start working before signing any paperwork?
I agree. I wouldn't start any job without signing something. It could have a lot of bad consequences written all over it. But then again, I've been screwed over a couple times so I don't do anything unless it's in writing and I have a copy.
She now has the potential to be totally screwed and taken advantage of. She might luck out, but the longer this goes on the worse off she is. She needs to get this straightened out ASAP. This is not normal protocol. At all.
I have actually told work I wouldn't come in and do any substantial work (it was an academic position, I was fine with reading papers) until my paperwork was properly processed.

She's newly out of college, so is pretty green in how the working world works, especially in the field she's in. I think the office is a 2 or 3 dr. office, so certainly small and no dedicated HR or anything like that.
Yes, I think I'm the only one concerned. When my mom told me about the job and how she hadn't signed paperwork and had worked for a week, she was shocked that I was so appauled. My sister had some bad luck with other employers (one let her go after a week or so without reason, and a second ended up hiring the student my sister trained instead of her, which ended up ok because the doctor sounded like an inappropriate creep). So - I just don't see this working out well unless things start out the right foot for a change.
