Show me your autograph quilts and a few ?s

I am going to complete the quilt before it gets signed so I was hoping to get any advice. I figured a dark color for the back so it doesn't show through.

1. How big did you make squares? There is an estimated 60 people coming but I want to make it smaller and have more than one person sign in a square.

2. What do you use to write on the quilt?

3. Did you put stabilizer behind the squares?

4. Anything else you think might help me.

Please and thank you!

Re: Show me your autograph quilts and a few ?s

  • This may not be helpful since you plan to have yours finished, but when I made my sister's quilt, I had cut the blocks 4x4 then ironed them onto freezer paper. Then to make sure no one wrote in the seam allowances, I put masking tape around the outer 1/4" borders. I think next time I will use a tape that will come off easier though, since the masking tape stuck a little better than I wanted it to. I was crazy and made 100 blocks. I used a sawtooth star pattern and made the center of each star with the signed blocks. My quilt ended up coming out large enough for a king size bed, but then again that's the size I (stupidly!) planned to make. I don't know that I'll ever make a quilt that big again.... I had my MIL embroider a few of the blank blocks that I had left over.

  • Oh, and I used Micron fabric pens, which I found at Joann's.

  • I think this would be a great idea for my parents' anniversary! Please post again when its complete!

I have never quilted before but I think this would be perfect. In two years I am throwing them a nice party for their 30th anniversary and I think it would be awesome to have the guests write something nice. I'm excited! Thanks for the idea =D
