Recipe to impress a Spanish chef??

Alright, I need some thoughts.

I'm in rough shape and a wonderful, wonderful friend of ours brought me over some cream of pumpkin soup. I'd really like to give him something back in appreciation. "Problem" is, he's a cook - and a darn good one at that. So, I'd like to impress if I can.

I was thinking about making an apple pie since I'm getting quite good at them. But, I figured I'd ask you all to see if you could suggest a (stereo)typical American dessert/snack he may have never had before.

Re: Recipe to impress a Spanish chef??

  • Apple pie is always good

    Banana bread

Pumpkin pie or pumpkin bread would be in the season

Popcorn balls are fun. Can vary the flavors so many ways, are yummy, and don't require crazy cooking.

    Peanut butter cookies

I want to suggest Puppy Chow but don't know if you can get Chex, Crispex, or something similar.

  • Chocolate covered pretzels. They are really easy to make and I have found that they are quite popular here.

  • Stick with the apple pie if you have it down.  Can't get more American than that! Also, second the peanut butter cookies, especially if you can get access to proper American peanut butter.

  • I posted an amazing recipe for cinnamon rolls the other week if you've got brown sugar.

Otherwise I'd also go with the apple pie if you've got it down. Here in Germany apple pie (different from the American version, but the same basic concept) is pretty popular, so I try to avoid making American apple pie and go for things that are a little different.

  • Peanut butter cookies (no one knows what to do with peanut butter in Europe!)

Pumpkin pie (not sure if you said pumpkin's not a possibility?)

Gooey Butter Cake (this is totally from my hometown of St.Louis, but its becoming popular outside of the STL, its FABULOUS)

I second not making apple pie, its pretty common to eat here...tarte aux pommes, not exactly the same thing but similar enough.

  • No easy access to peanut butter in my town - I've got to hit a city to find the real stuff! Same issue with pumpkins/canned pumpkins. Think I'll go into town tomorrow to see if any fruit shops have real pumpkins for Halloween so I can make some pumpkin chocolate chip cookies!

I ended up making an apple crisp. I still feel pretty rough so it was the easiest thing on the list. Just sent DH up with the plate.
  • I'd vote against anything with peanut butter.  I've never met a non-American who likes peanut butter.
  • Good point. However, my BIL actually likes PB. Then again he's got pretty "exotic" tastes. He even willingly eats my creations, something others in the family are more hesitant about doing! Smile
