reapplying to a company

DH just applied for and was interviewed for a carpenter position at a university about a month ago.  He was not selected but now they have a position for a maintenance worker in the same department.  He wants to apply for that now, in the cover letter should he mention anything about being interviewed already?  He is experienced as both a carpenter and maintenance worker so he would qualify for both positions.

Re: reapplying to a company

  • I wouldn't mention anything about the previous interview.
  • I might say I was familiar with the university since I had interviewed previously.

Ditto this. Back in  July I was interviewed for a position with a large company, was convinced I got the job with the manager, let's call him "A",  telling me that I'm on the "top" of his list. To my surprise, I was not selected, they went with an internal candidate.

A month later, similar position opened up under a different manager, let's call him "B", for the same large company. I applied and got the interview. I didn't mention anything about my previous interview with manager "A" until I was asked if I knew anything about the position. I then took the opportunity to explain that I was recently interviewed for the similar position under manager "A" and how I was disappointed that I didn't receive the job offer while assuring them that I respect their decision. I also mentioned that I was convinced that I wanted to work for the company and after talking to manager "A" about the position, I only got excited with the idea of being in that position. I was hired to work for manager "B" in similar position for the same large company.

The reason I didn't tell them up front:  I did not want the manager "B" to know that I was given an interview in similar position and not get hired. I was afraid that if manager "B" knew that I was not selected by manager "A" that there must be a valid reason and that manager "B" would not bother having me come in for the interview. I wanted manager "B" to get to know me first and when I was comfortable I was able to inform manager "B" that I was in fact interviewed by manager "A".

This is actually my reasoning too and I am actually in this situation as we speak... I interviewed with a company in January and didn't get the job. Two weeks ago, I saw an opening at the same company that was a great fit (a much better position than the one I interviewed for in January) and I was really excited about it but also nervous that they wouldn't want to interview me because of the January interview. I didn't mention anything about it in the cover letter, I wanted them to have me come in for the interview and then decide, rather than "oh she didn't work out in January why bother with her again.." and part of me thinks if the same person gets the cover letter could see that and just toss the resume and move on.. I got a call for an interview, it turned into a second interview and I am looking to hear from them hopefully soon.
