BWLO: Regression Question

I forgot my list of questions for B's 6 month check-up, and didn't remember them all.  (Most were answered in what he told us anyway)  I am debating whether or not this one is worth calling his Doctor about.  He started babbling when he was supposed to (repeating vowel sounds), however for the past 2 weeks he has completely stopped.  He still shrieks, makes eye contact, and responds to us talking, just no babbling.  In the time since he has stopped, he has cut 2 teeth, starting army crawling/scooting forward, and getting up on hands/knees and rocking a little.

I know some regression is normal while learning a new skill.  Would you call the Dr. about his lack of babbling or wait a little bit to see if it starts up again?  At his appointment, the Dr spent a good amount of time interacting with him (10-15 minutes) and seemed happy with his abilities.

Re: BWLO: Regression Question

  • Personally, I'd wait. Jane routinely learned something, mastered it and then just stopped doing it.  Apparently it's normal, it's like "ok, got this...." and they they move on to the next thing.  Good news is she has eventually "gotten" it all back.  KWIM?  Example, the last two weeks she has been baby talking way more than normal (babbling), not saying words for things she knows how to say.  But, all of a sudden, she's saying much harder things (names of her classmates, attempting to repeat almost anything we say and working on her own name).

It's like "yea Mom, I know, that's a diaper, great.....I want to learn to say Jane".

Anyway, I'd watch it and mention at next appt.

  • I think you're okay to wait it out a little while. Lincoln did this same thing and our pedi reassured us that it was okay. If I remember correctly, it lasted a few days and as soon as his teeth broke through he was back to his babbling ways!

  • Another who would wait.  There's nothing different to do right now either way, just continue to play and interact with him.
