Oktoberfest in Helen

We were thinking about going to Helen this weekend for Oktoberfest with some friends.  We have never been before, so I am wondering if any of you have been and if it's worth the drive.  Also, my friend just told me that a co worker told her we should leave at 8 or 8:30 the latest because traffic is so bad.  Is this true?  It seems so early considering it doesn't start till 1.

Thanks :)

Re: Oktoberfest in Helen

  • It's been awhile since I've been but I agree that traffic gets really really bad. Sometimes you spend the day just sitting on that little road waiting to get in and park somewhere. So it's prob better to start earlier rather than later. I'm not really a fan of Helen at all so it's hard for me to say if it's worth the trouble but if you are into beer I'm sure it will be fun!
  • I've been before. For me it was a bit of a let down. I could drink the same German Beer with my friends outside at a pub in Midtown.  The traffic is crappy though so I would go early too.

  • Thanks ladies.  I don't drink beer at all, but my friends and DH do so I'm trying to be a good sport and go.  I will let them know what you said and maybe they will change their minds ;)
  • For me the shops were a bit kitschy, I'm not going to buy any of the hokey souvenirs.

Have you ever heard of Der Biergarten in Downtown. I've never been there but It maybe worth checking out. It looks like they are celebrating Oktoberfest too.

No, I haven't heard of it.  We moved here not even a year ago, so everything is still pretty new to us.  I will check it out and suggest it to them.  I think Helen looks like a cute town and wouldn't mind going some other time for lunch or something, but since I'm not a beer drinker, I don't really care if we go this weekend or later.  I guess it just depends on what they want to do.

  • Der Biergarten would be a good substitute for Helen IMO

I agree. The last time we passed through Helen on the way home from the mountains, we ate at this German restaurant (I don't remember its name) whose food was crappy. I mean cheap, tourist-trap food.

Another option for really good German food is Gasthaus in Cumming; it's excellent.
