Good Morning everyone!

How is everyone's week?  Better than mine, I assume.

QOTD:  What was your most memorable Halloweeen costume?

******

First day back at work after the horrendous long weekend.  It's not going well.  I want to alternately cry and scream and my focus is not where it needs to be (billing as many hours as possible) and is instead on looking for another job.  Gah.  Less than 2 weeks of being an IN.

QOTD:  A vodka bottle.  I wore all white with a red sweatshirt underneath with the hood up (for the cap) and then pinned a homemade Smirnoff label we made on a sheet of white cloth to my shirt.  My friend was a highlighter.  Ever since then I like the idea of being an inanimate object for Halloween.  Not that I dress up very often.

Re: Good Morning everyone!

  • Good morning!

My week sure isn't starting out well. Last night we got home from our weekend away and our apartment reeks of mildew. Cleaning Dude came in here and turned off our AC. All of our furniture smells so horrible that it is unusable. I spent my morning alternately calling people who might be able to help and sitting on the floor crying about it. We are headed to the Maldives next week for vacation and I'm seriously contemplating bailing when we get back. I want to stay with H, but this just isn't working for me. IN - FAIL. I feel like a loser for considering leaving, but I am beyond exasperated.

QOTD: I'm not a huge fan of Halloween costumes, probably because mine are always super lame. I think I have to go back to childhood and an awesome Minnie Mouse costume that my mom made me to remember a good costume that I had.

  • We're off to a rough start. Looks like BabyD has hand, foot, mouth disease. Right now he's in good spirits, no fever, and is acting normal. But he did have a fever last night and he does have some rash on the bottom of one foot and a couple spots on one hand. He's out of school until the rash subsides and he is fever free for a minimum of 24 hours. I'm preparing for this to get worse before it gets better. Especially since multiple kids from school have been sick and some of them really bad.

Big problem is both of us work full-time. Today I'm home with the little guy, tomorrow the housemaid will be here, but the rest of the week? Next week? And unfortunately it's not good for me to be around while pregnant. I see my doctor on Saturday and we'll see what she says.

QOTD: I was the St. Pauli girl one year. That was an incredibly popular costume.

  • Morning, we had a nice weekend and now its extending, DH is off until Wed and then I don't see him until Friday night!

QOTD: I always end up recycling my ren fest garb!

  • The week started out very badly when my computer decided it did not like to work with any of my browsers, so I had a very frustrating Sunday -- though I did manage to see the end of the Georgia/Florida game before I lost connectivity.

Monday has been a mile-a-minute getting ready for the public holiday tomorrow.  I need the day off.  It's my first holiday since starting work and I am so ready for it.

The mail also brought two RSVPs to my Thanksgiving Feast at the end of the month.  I was beginning to think it would go the way of DH's birthday party kaffafle when we invited 16 people and no one came.

And, best bonus I've had in a while, one of the networks here is carrying Jeopardy!  I have missed that more than I thought I would.  My mother and I would play along with the show, and I miss the competitions.

QOTD:  Warning:  Halloween has bad memories for me.  The last time I willingly dressed up for Halloween, I was a Playboy Bunny.  I looked good too...right up until Mother Nature had other plans for me.  I got my first ever period that night.  It turned out not to be a good day -- we got to wear our costumes to school, but I left before the costume contest and stayed in all night.  The only other time I have dressed up since, I was required to do so by the sorority I was pledging in college and I dressed as a modern nun (with the short habit) -- we had to use only stuff we could find in our closets -- and none of the actives believed me when I explained it was a habit.  That was the last straw with the pledging process and I dropped out that night.  Sorry to be such a Halloween downer.

  • Good morning! I'm hoping that all the pps have better weeks than their weekends!
Brit's, don't feel bad for your thoughts of bailing.  I don't think I would feel any differently.  You're managing a pregnancy in a country where medical care is far different from that in westernized countries, which already deserves an award.  I hope that you guys are able to figure out some way to make your place, or move to a new place, just so that you are comfortable.

FayeD- I hope that the doctor is able to help give you some assistance with avoiding infection.  Sending you and BabyD lots of health vibes!

This weekend was good.  DH was able to gather a small gang of friends to move in some of our heaviest furniture into our house.  I am so thankful that we have fall break this week, so I can work on packing and laundry.  I just can't work the way I used to, needing breaks during the day, and now, my ankles are swelling during the day, so now I need "feet up" breaks too.

QOTW:   My mom made me a gorgeous Christmas tree costume when I was in Pre-K.  She spent so much time on it.  There were two problems though- I couldn't sit down, which was a problem at school, and all of the kids made fun of me, because I was dressed up for the wrong holiday!

  • Morning!

QOTD:  I was Foxy Cleopatra last year.

  • Good morning and Happy Halloween! I had an awesome weekend. We had a Halloween party on Saturday and everyone was quite drunk and had an amazing time. It was also the first time that BF met some of my friends, and they all loved each other.

Nothing riveting going on this week. Just the usual work.

QOTD: When I was 11 my mom made me a cat costume It was a full body fleece suit with a hat that had ears on it. It was so great and just as importantly, it was super warm and cozy for trick-or-treating in.

  • Morning - Dishwasher repair guy is here now, yay! It has been broken since last Tuesday, so it'll be a relief to be able to use it again. We hardly have enough time to get things done as it is without adding the chore of dishwashing to the list.

QOTD: Mine favorite costume was not mine but my brother's. When we were in school my mom always made our costumes, and one year he decided he wanted to be a tube of toothpaste. She did an awesome job making a costume out of white felt complete with Colgate logo and minty fresh or whatever underneath the logo and a round white hat as the cap. I agree with Jetur that I have grown to appreciate the inanimate object costumes much more than the "sexy _____ (nurse/witch/etc etc)".

Yeah, I don't like how some people treat Halloween as a time to just dress more slutty than they would otherwise ever feel comfortable with.  Especially when it's something normal-ish that they just make sexy.  Like a "sexy cowgirl" which is normal, but with boobs and a midriff.  Or reeeeeaaally short shorts, but otherwise not really a costume.

My second year of law school I dressed as an esay or vato (a Mexican southern California type of gangster).  It was funny because only the Californians knew what I was immediately, everyone else didn't get it even after an explanation.

I wore a plaid button up shirt with a tight wifebeater underneath and huge pants held up by a webbed belt showing my boxers underneath.  The look was completed with dark eyeliner for my lips and a tear on my cheek.  Oh, and hair slicked back with lots of gel into a low ponytail.

The only problem was that this was sorta normal enough not to obviously be a Halloween costume, so I probably got more weird looks than people who go all out and do something crazy.

  • I'm off work today and tomorrow, so I only work 2 1/2 days this week. YAY! H works today so I will be heading up there to have lunch with him. I am in desperate need of a housekeeper because I feel like this place isn't getting any cleaner on its own.

QOTD: In first grade, I dressed up as a granny, complete with a goodwill granny dress, a wig, glasses, and towels shoved in the back  of my pants to give me a big ol' granny booty.

  • Morning. Not much going on here today - just the usual. Making soup, some sort of Halloween treat and watching scary movies later tonight with DH.

QOTD: Mine isn't a cutesy costume. One year I decided to dress up as a dead soldier. I bought some fatigues and combat boots from an army supply store, and a tan shirt that completed the outfit. Then I shredded the shirt and added punctures to the fabric to make it look like bullets had gone through and painted myself up with ketchup. I was probably 16 or 17, so too old for trick or treating.

I sat on my parent's porch swing slumped over like you'd position a dummy. As soon as teenagers and adults (who were trick or treating) would come onto the porch and inspect my costume (without me moving - I was holding the candy bowl), as they turned around I'd jump up and scream. I made a few adults curse and jump head first over the railing, and a couple of teenagers crap themselves. It was hilarious because my makeup was so realistic. I was freezing though!

my brother did that one year. We had a dummy on the porch for the weeks leading up to halloween. It was a sweat suit stuffed with pillows wearing a scary mask. So for halloween night, my brother got into the sweat suit and padded it with  pillows and sat there with the candy bowl. He would say to each person 'Take two' (pieces of candy) in a mechanical type voice like a recording. When one of the older kids reached in to take a big handful, my brother moved a bit and yelled out 'I SAID TAKE TWO!' and the poor kid almost flew off of the porch

This made me laugh so hard it startled D and made him start whining.

  • Good morning!

Brit - I think you've done amazingly so far. It sounds like most of your frustrations are from the apartment, can you bail on that first and see how you feel? And definitely bail on the cleaner guy, he's rubbish! But you aren't failing, I had a super hard time when we moved here and it's not at all the kind of culture shock that a lot of you go thorugh.

All is okay here. Still in a lot of pain but have my first physio appointment this afternoon so keeping my fingers crossed. There's a wait for an NHS physio so I'm going private for now, which makes me feel like a bit of a failure. I've spent years telling everyone in the states that I have really good healthcare but now I'm starting to see the failings... :-(

QODT: I hate dressing up and almost always have. When I was little I would dress up as a gypsy or a princess pretty much every year for Halloween and Purim (Jewish holiday). It was basically the same outfit, tons of costume jewelry and scarves!

Thank you guys. I finally got the furniture problem fixed at least. I made the cleaning guy smell it and then move it all out. As he was doing that, someone showed up with new furniture, probably taken from a different apartment.

I don't have much time left here anyway, H's project is coming to a close. He has a local resource (who has been working in the US for the past few years) coming in a few weeks, so they will have some transition period, then that's that. I would like to stick it out as long as possible though because although H is supposed to come home in time for Christmas I would not be the least bit surprised if H gets sent back to India as soon as we have our baby in January. In that case, we decided that I would end up staying in the US without him.

  • Happy Halloween IN's!

We have a pretty chill week ahead of us. Not many ppl in work today since tomorrow is a day off. DH and I will work though, we're saving our time off for the trip home for my sister's wedding. I am so excited to see Texas! We leave in 10 days!

QOTD: I dressed up like a piece of cake one year. My Mom made my costume and it was amazing, pink felt, glitter icing, and candle hat! That year, my friends went trick or treating with me as an ice cream cone, and a cupcake. It was so fun!

We're headed to the Maldives on Christmas Eve!
