Stripping membranes?

The doc offered it up at the last appt. Anyone have this done? Is it horribly painful? Did it induce labor? My due date is Wednesday.... So is my next appt. I'm doing just fine health wise, so it's not like I really need to go into labor, I'm just tired of the waiting game. R was 3 weeks early, E was 4 days early. So far "infant" is not looking like she's going to be early at all.

I was planning on going spicy again for lunch. Didn't work last night, but I could have made it spicier...

Re: Stripping membranes?

  • My doctor did it at my 39 week appt without me even knowing.  Sometimes it can be painful, but mine just felt like some light cramping.  I delivered 5 days later, so it didn't do much for me.
  • My doctor was OOT for my 39 week appt so I saw someone else.  I think she stripped mine b/c it was the most painful internal I'd had.  At the time I thought the pain was just because it was someone different but I went into labor 6 hours later.  For the record, I had been told at that appt that I wasn't likely to go early based on my (lack of) progress.

  • Spicy food did nothing for me.

My dr. stripped mine at my 40 week appointment.  It didn't hurt.  I had a little discomfort, but not more than the exams at the end of my pregnancy. And given that I wanted the baby OUT, I was fine with it.  My membranes were stripped at 8am, and I was in (very) active labor at 10:40pm.

    I say go for it.

  • Oh, and I would say that I felt something was happening around lunchtime that day.  I went home from work a little early, probably around 2:30, b/c I felt that I should take a nap (never did this throughout pregnancy).

It was like my body knew I would be up all night.

  • I had mine stripped with Elsie.  It's a bit uncomfortable.

I tried the spicy food thing, it didn't work with me.  Have your tried fresh pineapple?

    Good luck!

  • I had it done with #2 at 38 weeks (no flaming) and it was just uncomfortable.  Nothing like being 38 weeks+ pg.  I had some cramping, but didn't go into labor.  I was induced a week and a half later.

I think stripping just speeds up the process if it was already meant to happen.  In my case, it wasn't meant to happen.

Just do it, for funsies :)

    thanks to jennied :)

  • I had it done at 38 wks as my induction was scheduled for 39 weeks... I just felt a ton of pressure... slightly uncomfortable.... but it was done quick. You have to be dialated some in order for it to really work... I was only at a 1. The further dialated you are the less pressure you will feel. I still was induced at 39 wks as it did nothing for me. I'd do it!! GL
