Moms: Cow's milk and sippy cup questions

Cow's milk question: When during a meal do you give milk? When water? I want to be sure he still gets water.

Sippy cup question: WTF is up with all the different spouts? Abe has been using a Tommy Tippee since he was about 6 months. We always offer it with water at all meals. He has always done fantastic with the cup and water. Tonight I gave him WCM for the first time and didn't want to confuse him with the water cup so I put the milk in a Born Free sippy that has a soft/chewy spout. All he wanted to do was chew on the spout. Didn't want to eat. Just chew. I put the milk in the Tommy cup and he threw it on the floor. I took the cover off and gave him some milk so he could see that it wasn't just water. He would drink the water out of the cup if I gave it to him but not with the cover on it. WTH?? And why is it so hard to get liquid out of some of those sippy cups?

Re: Moms: Cow's milk and sippy cup questions

  • I wouldn't worry about confusing him. Let him have the cup he's most comfortable with. I agree, they are all a pain. We still deal with that! We did morning, some time in the afternoon, and in the evening with milk. Sometimes she chugs it down others it goes back in the fridge for later. A lot of times she doesn't want milk with a a meal, too filling. He would let me know if she wanted water or milk. It became clear when I'd offer her one and she wouldn't drink. There are days she drinks more water than milk but in the end we avenge about 21oz of milk and 8 oz of water. Oh in the very beginning we held her and cuddle with the milk supy cup just like it was a bottle.
  • I agree with Maeghan about not worry about giving different cups. Right away, Lily was able to just take a sip and realize it was milk sometimes and water other times. I give her both water and milk at the same time with meals and let her choose what to drink. She chooses water about 99.999999% of the time. At non-meal times, I give her water. She doesn't really drink milk. I add carnation instant breakfast to it and she'll drink it some of the time, but I have to give her yogurt in order to make sure she gets her calcium (I'm also still nursing twice a day). I'm not really sure if this is much advice because I am telling what we do and our kid doesn't drink milk, LOL.

  • MIT - I'm kind of in a situation like yours. We are still nursing and I plan on nursing for another year so I know that he is getting a lot of the nutrients that he needs from that. But at daycare he will be taking WCM in bottles (we are doing half and half for a couple weeks or a month since I have a freezer stash). I wanted to intro it this weekend so I can see what he thinks and see if there is a reaction...I'm sure there won't be since he eats yogurt and cheese, etc.

I'll chill out a little and try again tomorrow. I just felt so defeated...he threw the damn cup at me.

  • Aw poor Mama! Try doing 25/75. We had to go real slow with the transition because of DD's protein issue, but I've heard from a lot of mom's who had luck this way. Plus, your stash doesn't take such a hit at the beginning. You'll still see if there is a reaction, but maybe he'll be a little less grumpy about the change for a little while. I also don't put too much concern with DD's consumption because she eats so much yogurt and cheese. Hope tomorrow goes better for you two. Oh! If he still doesn't like it, a friend of mine made her son a  frozen milk slushie to get her son to like the taste. She spoon fed it to him like ice cream. He liked that so much better than just drinking it and then he just got used to it.

  • Relax Mamma...it'll be ok :)

We use the munchkin brand cups with the soft spouts and the Take and Toss cups.  I'm also starting to pull out all the cups I thought she wouldn't take (now she is).

WCM is an acquired taste for them.  T didn't take a bunch of it at first either but now she drinks plenty.  We warmed it in the microwave too (like 20 secs for about 8 oz) just to take off the chill.  We always gave her bottle warm so I think that it helped her realize it was what she should be drinking.

She usually has a couple of sippys floating around the house with water.  I'm not sure exactly how much per day she is drinking, but she still has to use both inserts in the BGs so I'm POSITIVE she is getting enough to drink! :)

  • The cups are frustrating!  Developmentally, the sippys are not so good, so it's all marketing.  Straws and open cups are the best, so that's what we've done.  We're predominantly open cups now that he holds safely on his own (we say "two hands' and he does...so cute!), with straw cups on the run. Adrian understands when we tell him what's in there, so I don't worry about cup confusion with contents.

Adrian eats 5 times a day.  Three meals, two snacks.  Milk goes with the meals, water with the snacks.  He doesn't drink a lot...3-4 ounces tops, unless we make a smoothie for him with milk, yogurt and fruit.  Then he'll drink whatever we give him.

Adrian was annoyed at first with the cows milk.  I never put it in the bottle. I guess I was just a mean mama.  I decided that we're getting rid of the bottle at 1 and everytime I gave him the cup instead.  He didn't cry or throw a fit, he just threw it back at me.  After a couple days, he realized that's what he got and just settled into the new routine. I was and am still nursing the little bit I make, but used to transition to pack up all the bottles.

  • i don't blame him- cows milk is gross :)

I hope that the transition goes smoothly.  And I cannot believe he's almost 1!

  • I had heard sippy's were discouraged for developmental reasons, but I never figured out why (and Felix loves a sippy). I don't have any advice on the sippy end, I have a playtex brand and vital baby, but he seems to like them both.

I don't drink milk, so we tried giving Felix rice milk and he wouldn't drink it. Then we gave him cows milk and he wouldn't drink that either, so we are still giving him formula 2-3 times a day and then water during the day. He drinks a ton of water, so I have to remember to call the pedi to find out if we should be doing something else.

  • I seem to have blocked out the specifics of Eli's transition to cows milk, but I do remember it wasn't easy! I didn't want to put milk in a bottle, so we went straight to the cup as we weaned. We went through a lot of trail and error with different cups before finding one that worked for him (Gerber Sip and Smile, I think it was called.) He did not drink much milk at first and still doesn't drink a ton. We offer milk with meals and most snacks. He has water available at all times at home and drinks quiet a bit throughout the day. The biggest thing I remember was wanting to stay hyper focused on how many oz he was getting, like I did with BM. I really needed to relax and trust that he would get what he needed. Hang in there!
