does my dog have dry skin?

He got groomed about 2.5 weeks ago at the vet.  He has been licking WAY more since then than normal... mostly on the inside of his back legs.  I know he doesn't have fleas, and there is nothing on the skin there that appears to be irritating him (bumps or anything) so dry skin is my only guess.  Something is irritating him there!

Any ideas?  Anything I can do for him?

  • Have you changed foods lately? Leo had this problem when we fed him a food that contained duck. I assumed he was allergic and haven't ever fed it again.

This.  Perhaps he's also being bothered by something they used on him at the groomer's.  A shampoo or a deodorant spray perhaps.  Definitely sounds like some sort of allergy.  Maybe try bathing him with a mild or sensitive skin formula shampoo & see if it improves.  Another possiblity could be flea dermatitis.  Your dog doesn't have to have fleas to have a reaction to one random bite.  My little dog has this problem every year, no matter whether she's treated for or actually has fleas.  One bite will cause her to have hives, and sometimes even a hot spot in the location of the bite, and she'll itch for a week or two after it occurs.  You said your dog seems to be paying specific attention to his leg; perhaps this is the source of the problem.  We have a topical spray that is for the itching, and it seems to help her some.  Maybe try that.

Whatever the cause, hope your pup stops itching & feels better soon!
