You have a person come into your home to pet sit while you are away. This person is 18 yrs of age. She's done this job on a short term stint several times. You have told her before to always remember to not leave anything down where the dog might reach or dig into. Such as purses, backpacks etc. It's always best to keep your purse, etc on the kitchen table, dining room table, etc.
But this time she watches her for you for two weeks and stays at your house. No problem. But evidently she fails to remember that information and the dog gets into her purse. Not one time, but on two different occasions. She tells you this, while you are frustrated after a travel ordeal, and you tell her to leave you a list of what was destroyed. You find this list:
1. 3 packs of cigarettes ****
2. 2 lip glosses
3. eyeliner
4. mascara
5. $20 bill
*** she did NOT smoke before you left on the trip and took up the nasty habit while you were away. At least she had the decency to not smoke in your home.
You feel that you should replace the items the dog destroyed; yet you feel that it's a lesson learned because you have told her what not to do.
What would you do?
I have been told by a friend at work that she would not replace anything at all. I hastily said, via phone when I found out what the issue was, to leave me a list and I would replace it. However I did not know about the cigarettes. Thus I am leaning towards replacing the makeup and the $20 but not the Cigarettes. I don't replace vices.
Her Dad, who has said that it's my decision, would not replace anything, but it was up to me.
Re: Quick, but Urgent Question- What would you do?
i might replace the cash, but no.way.in.hell would i replace the cigarettes.
the rest is up to you.
I'd replace it. 18 does sound a little young to have free reign over a house for 2 weeks.
Is this person family?
i'd give her money to compensate her for all the items lost, including the cigarettes.
I'd replace everything but the cigarettes.
ETA: Actually, wait - no I wouldn't. I missed that the dog got in her purse twice. You'd think she'd learn after the first time, especially since you warned her.
I'd give her $20 and then enough $ to cover the rest, including the cigarettes unless it was one of my sisters. If it is just a friend's child i'd think it was not my job to decide if they should be smoking or not.
Now if she had said it was a bag of pot then I'd probably just replace the makeup and money.

This exactly.
Yup.
I would also remind her that this is why you told her not to leave her purse out where the dog can get into it. In the future (assuming you use her to pet sit again) I would remind her repeatedly not to leave her personal belongings out where the dog can get them and that you will not be replacing future lost items.
Ditto
I wouldn't replace anything....except that you said you would.
So in that case, I'd replace everything but the cigarettes. And she wouldn't be pet sitting for me again...
Same here.
um, if anyone put cigarettes within reach of my dog to where he could eat them she'd be getting a giant effing earful from me. that's really irresponsible and just... no.
you aren't caring for a dog very well if you're leaving crap on the floor that he can eat. i'd pay her what i had agreed to pay her and tell her tough bananas. she should have been more responsible. shoot, i'd tell that to my 14 year old.

Thanks Everyone. I appreciate your input.
This all came at me on Saturday/Sunday when I was trying to get home. So when I said that I would replace it, leave me a list, I really could have cared less about what was going on at home; I was more focused on just getting home, getting a shower and something to eat.
She's a friends daughter and she's kept the dog before, but not over this amount of time.
I have told her that I would replace the $20 and pay for 1/2 of the makeup, however I will not be replacing the cigarettes. And that I was pretty sure that I have mentioned to her before to be sure to not put anything down where the dog can get into it. I know the dog shouldnt do that, but she does it when she's bored or she smells anything faintly close to something she can eat. And trust me.. she eats just about anything except Limes!
Her dad is backing me on the decision.. and I know that they had some terse words over the whole situation last night. Mainly about her being more aware; thinking more clearly. You know.. if it were just one time, I would be ok. No biggie, replace everything (except the cigarettes). But the second time it happened.. that's her own damned fault.
I agree with you, but IF I was going to pay to replace the items (or even half of the makeup) I think I would pay for the ciggarettes. She paid for them like she paid for the other items, I don't think I could hold my personal feelings on what she buys against her. by that argument you could say you disagree with wearing makeup so you won't replace it.
Unless you hire her with the condition that she's a non smoker I don't think it's fair to pick and chose what you will replace (if you replace it at all, I would like to say I'd be like Jax and say tough cookies I warned you more then once).
This.
