Woonsocket

Ok... so my husband and I continue to toy around with various areas to move to, and we recently began considering Woonsocket. We've heard that some areas aren't great but that others are pretty nice!

Anyone have any thoughts?! Thanks!

Re: Woonsocket

  • I don't know much about Woonsocket.  If your looking in that area, you may want to look into Cumberland it borders Woonsocket.  I have a few friends that live there and they really like it.
  • I'm in Woonsocket, and yes, some areas are (much) nicer than others. Cumberland is more expensive than Woonsocket.

Is there anywhere in particular you're looking?

  • East Woonsocket is nice. Off Mendon Rd.

At this point, we're just looking for a rental in Woonsocket (mostly on Craigslist) but do not know the area well -- which areas of town are the nicer ones? How are the grocery stores? Restaurants?

Any idea how long it takes you to get to Worcester from Woonsocket?

    Thanks so much!!

  • It takes about 30 minutes Woonsocket to Worcester depending on traffic.

what type of place are you looking for?  How many bedrooms, etc?  I'm on the Woonsocket/Smithfield line (Off of Elder Ballou) There are grocery stores in the area, but I usually go to Stop and Shop in Lincoln or Bellingham (both close). Woonsocket has a few more restaurants than they use to.  River Falls, Vintage, Burrito Company, Vino's, a relatively new Mexican place.

The schools aren't great but we picked here because the commute into Massachusetts is pretty decent.  The commuter rail is in Franklin for a commute into Boston. It is easy to 95 north, south to Providence and relatively easy access to 495 for commute up towards the Mass Pike area.   Worcester is up 146.

The Wrentham outlets are an easy 8 miles from where we live.

  • Thanks for your response! :)

We're looking for a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment that allows pets (we have a small dog and cat), and has parking for 2 cars. We really aren't too picky. We have noticed that the cost of housing is much less in Woonsocket than other areas.

What areas of Woonsocket are the "better" areas to live in? Any suggestions are appreciated :)

    Thanks again!

  • The "Bernon" area would be the closest to 146 for your commute to Worcester

  • late getting back...

East Woonsocket & Bernon have some nice areas (I grew up in Bernon & currently live in East Woon). I'm only a few minutes from 99 and then it's only a minute or so to get to 146.

I do the grocery shopping at S&S in Bellingham (mostly) & Lincoln; sometimes (probably 1/3 the time) at Dave's at Smithfield Crossings (I tend to go there if I've got other places to shop, or if I'm taking the girls to lunch too -- J LOVES Panera. It's actually my 1st choice grocery, but sometimes convenience beats out preference). I very rarely shop at the Shaws on Diamond Hill - every.single.time. I do I end up coming home with something expired or rancid and since I only go there in a pinch & usually only for a few items I try to check everything, but I've got a nearly 3yo & an 11mo old so I can get a bit distracted.

  • I love Woonsocket. :) We live in the Globe Park area - I recommend the neighborhood.  It's on the North Smithfield side of town.  Close to 146!  Also very convenient to a major grocery store (Stop and Shop), although there are several others around if you wanted to go a few miles.

I feel like there are lots of deals to be had, because Woonsocket gets a bad rap.  There are plenty of nice areas! :)

    Good luck!

  • Oh - and if you're looking for an apartment, I know I've seen a few in my neighborhood.  I can keep an eye out for you, if you'd like!

  • We live in East Woon and I absolutely love my neighborhood.  If you're taking 146 every day, I definitely agree with either Bernon or Globe, they're closer to N.Smithfield.  Good luck finding your new place!
