I have a D&R related question for you. I don't really know the ladies on that board, but I know you're pretty much an expert after all the work you've done!

And anyone else can chime in, as well.

Okay, I decided to repaint my bathroom. It was baby blue. Everything was. The trim is now white, the cabinets are white, and the walls are "brown teepee" from Behr. It's kind of a light hot chocolate color. Anyway, the current cabinet/countertop is about 5 feet long, marble top, one sink. As much as I would love to rip it out, put in a pedestal sink and new tile, it just isn't in the budget. Over the cabinet is an unframed mirror in the same length, almost to the ceiling.

If I had the patience and artistic inclination, I would frame the mirror. However, I have neither of those things. I'm considering taking it out and replacing with a smaller framed mirror over the sink itself, with some sort of artwork on the sides.

Do you think this will look okay? It looks good in my mind, but I'm a little concerned about all the extra wall space and it maybe feeling smaller without all the reflection. It's a narrow galley-style bathroom.

Any thoughts and suggestions are appreciated! I don't have any pictures yet. I just finished painting everything but around the trim and the room is a disaster lol.

  • DOOOO IT!  It will look great - I can't find an electronic picture of the guest bathroom in our old house but we did the same thing - took out the big, unframed mirror and added a smaller framed one.  The extra space won't look strange at all (well, it might look strange to you at first!).

I don't know about you - but I think mirrors are ridiculously expensive.  DH and I made our own framed mirror - we bought the glass at HD - then framed the mirror with casing.  We didn't have a saw at the time, so HD cut the casing for us.  It is super, super easy and I think the entire project cost $100 and required little to no patience at all.  Google Martha Stewart framed mirror - you should be able to find it.

  • My mom suggested I frame the existing mirror, as we both agree with you that mirrors are ridiculously expensive. Lamps, too. I mean, really? What are they made of, straight-up ivory or something?

Anyway, I think it might take me some time to find the "perfect" mirror, and I might do some garage sale shopping to see if I can find any that can be re-vamped (thanks to the poster who put up the better after blog. I've gotten so many ideas!). I think framing the existing mirror would be too much, but if HD can cut the wood for me, then framing my own might not be out of the question, but as I can barely do anything craft-related I'm a bit nervous about screwing it up!

I'm also considering not putting the little white cupboard back up on the wall. H wants it up there, but it goes right over the toilet and I have dropped things in there so many times it's just not worth it to me. There is plenty of storage in the sink cabinet if I would just utilize it well.

We came home with a new showerhead today. Yay! The project is taking on a life of its own...

  • While you are at it..check out HD and Lowe's for vanities that are on sale.  Right now, they are getting rid of the "old" stuff and getting in the newer models. I have seen quite a few very cute vanities (in the Norman stores) that are over 50% off.

I agree about shopping garage sales and such for inexpensive mirrors you can refinish.  That's always more fun than buying something brand new!  As far as why mirrors are so expensive - jeez louise, it is ridiculous.  I guess that is why most historians claim the Hall of Mirros in the Palace of Versailles started WW II (because those countries that signed the Treaty of Versailles were jealous of the French's wealth - the treaty was signed in the Hall of Mirrors).

  • Our bathrooms were the same way. We took down the large mirrors and added framed mirrors in both bathrooms. I was unsure about it at first, but they look great.
  • I'm picturing a framed mirror in the center and tall complimentary pictures (the same height as the mirror) on either side. That sounds super cute!
  • our bathrooms both just have a mirror in the center.  I like the mirror with nothing on the side, but our vanities aren't 15 feet long so you might need something on the side.  Or maybe just a longer mirror?  Or maybe some sconces?

We tried to frame the mirror that was in our master when we remodled, but instead of buying a mirror piece and building a frame, I found a frame I loved at hobby lobby (on sale!) and H cut the mirror down to fit the frame.  I broke the cut mirror before we got it put the frame though, so we ended up having to buy one. I found one I loved for pretty cheap at Ross or Marshalls or somewhere like that though.

  • Fuzzy, you really just need to post pics of your bathroom so we can offer advice. Big Smile
  • Ha I'm working on it. I got it put together for the time being last night. I do love my new shower head, even if we can't get the arm out to match it!
