Very odd question......

Do you plan on saving your toddler's underwear for any other kids? My DD is outgrowing all of her underwear, and I am getting ready to buy her a bunch more. She got a bunch for Christmas last year, so she has probably 20 pairs at least.

Anyway, they aren't stained etc, but is it weird to save them? I guess at this point I don't really see it any differently than cloth diapering, because she is so little. Now, obviously if she was 6 or so, I would probably feel differently. I think I would feel weird just dropping 20 pairs of toddler undies in the garbage.

I saw a post about this on another board, and it seems like it is split about 60/40 with most people saying at this age that its ok.

Please tell me if I am weird.

Re: Very odd question......

  • If that's weird, then am I weird for buying used undies at the TANK sale for E?  I don't think it's weird at all, they get washed, just like regular clothes.
  • We don't throw them away unless there's a hole (our dog finds potty-training-accident undies a delicacy, gag!).  In my eyes it's the same as cloth diapers - no reason to trash them.

  • I am good with used undies for the kiddos only when I know who the previous owner was. I wouldn't buy at a garage sale or consignment without knowing.

Funny you should say this, because I actually was just talking to Holly about this on the phone, and I mentioned that I never see kids underwear at consignment. Guess I was wrong!

Holly didn't think it was weird either.

  • Nope, like I said, it's like cloth diapering or even regular clothes for that matter....THE WASHING MACHINE HAS A JOB right? Obviously I wouldn't expect my teenage girls to be passing their undies down after girly goods have happened in them but at this age, I say yes.

I don't find it weird or disgusting. Think about it, if your kid has an accident at school, don't they have some undies/clothes to put your kid in for the rest of the day? I'd like to see a parent throw a fit about that though i'm guessing younger kids that go to school have an extra pair in their bag (it's required at preschool).

Lots at the sale, I think they go quick for those potty training as many just get tossed and then some buy them b/c that is all they can afford. Underwear is expensive! I would do it. I see nothing weird about it. Granted I was the girl who would wet my pants at our friends house when I was little and come home wearing boy underwear and he would do the same at our house. Granted undies 30 years ago weren't as cute as they are today.

  • Alissa hasn't grown in years, it seems (well at least in underwear sizing) so hers are pretty worn out when we replace them. But, I wouldn't buy used underwear for her.

I don't know if I would buy them used or not. For some reason that weirds me out, which I am not sure why since I buy used cloth diapers. I have bought all of Addison's new, but I don't see an issue with handing them down to future siblings. I just wanted to see if I was the only one that thought it would be weird to throw them out. Embarrassed

Same with Peyton.  I swear, all three girls will wear the same size underwear forever---Peyton is still wearing 4T, easily...

I pass them down-like PP said, I wash diapers and share them amongst the diapered kiddos, underwear are the same for me.  If they get stained or holes, we toss them but the ones in good shape, they totally get passed to the next kid.

  • Also, half the underwear we have isn't what I've purchased anyway.  E comes home in different underwear from daycare all the time.  There are about 6 girls that are all the same size, so I don't expect my aunt to know who's is who's.

If they were visibly stained, that might be different, but thankfully, E has had only 1 poop incident in underwear since we put her in them.  The kid may pee her pants 4x a day, but by gosh, she'll only poop on the toilet!

  • Here's my odd answer: I fully intend for the boys to share underwear with each other, but I'd never keep it for a future kid.  That seems icky to me.  I feel the same way about used socks.  For some reason, I think everyone should get new socks and underwear.

Hmmm. Not to be snarky, but how is that different than sharing with a sibling? They are still wearing the other one's underwear, right? I can see if people think its weird, but this answer just confuses me more.

I would have never given a 2nd thought to socks. We have packed up all DD's socks, tights, etc. DS has even worn hand me down socks.

No, I know it doesn't make sense.  I think it's the thought of them sitting in a box in our musty basement for years.

(Although it's all moot since I'm not having anymore...)

  • I get them passed down from my cousin and my friend. I dont find it odd at all. They look great and the wash machine is there for a reason.

For you, or for the boys? Confused

  • My initial reaction was no way, but when you bring up the point of buying used CDs, I guess it is pretty much the same.  I think my initial reaction has more to do with the fact that I have a boy and a girl.  But, at the same time I am not one to throw away perfectly good items!

And I TOTALLY buy used socks - every chance I get!  My kids lose them all the time, but I do think there is something comforting about a brand new pair of socks.

  • I can't do it, buy E used undies.

I don't know what it is, it just grosses me out a little bit.

  • Most of N's underwear were C's, so not not weird at all...

I'm with Haven.  DS2 is getting everything else handed down to him, the least he can have is some new undies for himself.  Plus Thomas the Tank Engine is so last year (which is all DS1 has).  Ha.  Also, DS1 has had the same undies since he was 3 (that kid's hiney is never going to grow) so by the time #2 potty trains, they should be worn out. Same thing with socks.  Boys ruin socks so that's moot.

But yes, it skeeves me out just a bit. For my kids, not for everyone elses  :)

And crap.  I need to read the posts more closely.  Sibling underwear is probably okay.

Yes! I actually read it in 3-4 days, and it has been sitting here ever since. I keep meaning to swing by dance and drop it off to you. I really need to see the movie, but at this point I should probably just wait for it to show up on Netflix.

Thanks again for letting me borrow it!

  • Really, ladies?!

This post, about used underwear, is the most popular one of the day?

We need help.   We used to be so . . . fun.

  • The idea of used underwear kind of sicks me out.  Buy your kids some new undies, you cheapskates!

And yes, used cloth diapers are gross too, in case you were wondering. ;)

This makes me LOL, because I specifically told Holly that you would say it was gross. Smile
