Happy Halloween: I have a question (work related)

I need some advice and suggestions please.... I am working on getting my personal training certification and want to leave my current career path for the nutrition/fitness world.  When Im looking for a job as a trainer/group ex instructor, should I include all of my past work even though its in another field?

Im pretty sure I should, but how would you arrange it on your resume?  Any suggestions and advice are really appreciated!!

Re: Happy Halloween: I have a question (work related)

  • Why are you leaving your field? Just out of curiosity and you don't have to answer of course.

Maybe my sister (LWoods) will pop on, she's helped with my resume stuff before.

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • Ive been in the political field since I graduated college ( I never knew in a million years that is where I would end up). I had an epiphany this year and really had the chance to think about what I wanted to do/be.  I am an active person and I love being outdoors/ working out/helping people so I decided that I want to be a trainer. I eventually want to own and run my own bootcamp on the beach.  While my H is gone for this deployment, I am taking a few certifications online and educating myself. I hope to have everything done with and certified before he gets back.

And you all can ask any questions you want regarding anything. I am an open book!

  • I'm just surprised is all, you got a real job in politics, lots of people don't get that! :)

    Good luck!

  • Yes, I would still put the work experience on there, even if it doesn't relate.  While they obviously want to see experience, they also want to see your work history to get an idea of what kind of worker you would be.  For example, things like if you've been in the same field/job for years compared to someone that changes jobs every 2-3 months.  Also it explains lack in employment periods if you didn't put it on there.

I am a teacher (and hopefully will be one again when we move!) so I have my resume broken down into "educational experience" and "other work experiences."  I was an assistant manager at a bar and restaurant for 6 years through college and when I first started teaching, so I always had that on there as well.  Right now I'm working for a travel health company, and that will go on there when I update it for teaching.  If not it would look like I just did nothing for 2 years when I couldn't find a teaching job.

    True that!

Good luck with your new career direction!!

  • Thank you every body!

Regarding politics, I feel lucky to have had the opportunities that I have had... I mean I can say that I worked at the Capitol!!!   But after working both sides of it ( legislative and district side), I think I will be moving on soon.

     Thanks again for the advice.
