Aussie girls and others: thoughts on Qantas strike
Just in case it's not being reported where you're at; Qantas grounded their fleet. Three labor unions and the airline had been fighting for a few weeks. Yesterday, the CEO said no flights anywhere (domestic and international). Obviously this left a lot of people stranded (overseas and local). I feel so bad for people who were on a vacation or traveling with children and were told this news. Some had to pay for a flight back home with another airline. I'm sure it wasn't cheap at the last minute. This is one my worst nightmares now that I have Cole. If I was traveling by myself I wouldn't be worried, annoyed but not worried.
Of course when they interviewed the stranded passengers many of them said they'll never fly Qantas again. Do you think it's hurt the brand of Qantas? While I understand why the CEO did what he did, I can't imagine having to make that decision knowing the repercussions it would have in the short term.

Re: Aussie girls and others: thoughts on Qantas strike
I do think it'll damage the company's reputation - however, I think he did the right thing. Having another year (which is what they were threatening) of the unions striking off and on would have been even worse for the company - people would have totally lost faith in Qantas and when they would or wouldn't be flying and would just swap airlines.
I think by stopping everything he has brought it to a head and forced a resolution to happen now. And now that the gov't is involved they say it'll be sorted within a month. I do hope the company can recover from all this mess!
I do feel bad for the people caught up in this though, if I were them though I'd just rebook with another airline and continue on their journey asap. Qantas said they'd pay back fares 100% and virgin's offering reduced fares for those people - so that's good.
I work at the airport, so yep, I heard all about it. ;-)
I think it was a good thing. If they raised the fares enough to meet the union pay demands, people would stop flying Qantas. If they out-source the work, people will threaten to stop flying Qantas. But I see this as blowing over and in 6 months people will be back flying Qantas as if nothing happened. The only real Domestic choices are Qantas, Qantas Link, Jetstar (also owned by Qantas) and Virgin.
But to hear my Aussie boss on the subject kills me!
Boss: "you just don't know. You had a little tea party and a little war and you haven't had to listen to the POHMS whinge for the past 200+ years. The Union heads are all POHMS and all they like to do is whinge. So screw em. Let them whinge at home once they're locked out."
And this is why I will argue to the death that unions are the worst things ever.
DH disagrees, and asks me if I keep a copy of Mein Kampf under my pillow.
Chronically hilarious - you'll split your stitches!
I wrote a book! Bucket list CHECK!

I haven't flown within Australia much. I've flown between here and the states twice. The first time I flew Qantas. The second time I flew Air New Zealand. I will tell you that my Air New Zealand experience was much better than my Qantas experience and I would fly them again any time.
Qantas really doesn't have a great reputation in this area and it isn't helped by the giant pay raise their CEO just got in addition to the strikes.
