s/o Cultural Differences

Since the age differences post turned into a lot of pop culture references, it got me thinking.  If you and your partner grew up in different countries/cultures, what differences do you now have?

My example: DBF doesn't know what a Chia Pet is!  He did not get this costume (sorry can't PIP):

He also doesn't know anything about old skool Nickelodeon, which was pretty much the bane of my youth.

Sad times.

Re: s/o Cultural Differences

  • Good question. Oz is heavily influenced with American culture/movies/products so for the most part there isn't a lot he doesn't get. I've probably had to do more learning about his culture moving here.

In some ways I've almost had to learn a new language - even though they speak english. All the abbreviations and slang are a bit different.

  • DH didn't know what a big wheel was. What a sad child he must have been.

Same here.  DH pretty much knows all the same stuff, he even has an older sister who is the same age as me so he even knows all the girl stuff!

I've learned a few things from him, mostly Australian tv shows and stuff.

  • Sometimes I want to make a reference to a cartoon like Inspector Gadget, Animaniacs, etc, and DH just doesn't get it. When he was younger they weren't mass importing American cartoons like they do now. German kids today can watch Spongebob, Dexter, etc, so I think in the future there will be even fewer cultural differences between Germans and Americans.

  • H almost always gets my references as he's watched a ton of US stuff here in London, but there are some things in terms of music and shows that I have never seen in my life.

  • It's both age and culture related - computer ed. classes were, and still seem to be, few and far between here. This is a mixing the cultural differences/DH vent threads, but good lord man - try to figure it out yourself! He's just as bad as my Mom with computer issues, even though he likes to say he understands computers...
