Homeowners Ins premiums

I'm thinking that I should price out another insurance carrier.  I think I'm paying more than we should for our policy--between $1,400 and $1,600/yr for our 110 year old brick twin; we have no outbuildings (sheds, garages, or pool).  And, we have our home policy bundled with our car insurance.

In addition (which might be why the policy is high), we have our household items covered to the full replacement cost.  I know that changing our deductible can make the price go up or down.

Are my costs on par? Should I shop around?

Re: Homeowners Ins premiums

  • Id shop around even if you stay with your current provider but have some ammunition to get your rate lowered.

When we lived in DH (I assume you remember our house?) our policy was $700-800/year with AAA. That was bundled with our car and with an EXTRA sewer water backup rider to cover possibly damages to our finished basement. We had unlimited replacement for rebuilding the house (or whatever thats called when you are not capped at an amount to rebuild). We did NOT have full replacement value of our personal property but the level included was something that seemed ungodly to me like $200-300k. We did have an alarm system which lowered the premium but only by like $25-50/year.

We had to use the policy to replace our roof /siding etc due to hail damage and they were fabulous. A little process heavy with multiple processors and inspectors involved but no hassle or questioning and they gave a fair amount to realistically cover damages.

  • I'd shop around too... I pay about $850 a year and have full replacement (+10%) and have the highest liability coverage and low deductibles (I'm a lawyer... I worry about coverage limits more than most) we also have riders for a few things like my engagement ring and stuff on it.  We are currently using Safeco (under liberty mutual) but when we had Travelers we were around the same price.  We have our car insurance on the same policy and have all those discounts as well.  If you want my agent's number send me a PM... she's great!

  • Our policy which is full coverage and 100% replacement on a 50 year old row home outside the city is around $450 a year.  We found AAA and Allstate to be the lowest rates.  It doesn't hurt to call around.

  • he is with liberty mutual
  • Thanks all for the info.I appreciate this.

Lachute, is your person a broker or with one insurance co?

kross, I'm going to have to check back in with the same broker I recommended to you back in the day...  it's been awhile

  • With one company.
  • Ditto what pps said about Allstate being competitive. We got ours through Dan Todd in Malvern.  (610) 408-0800.  He is with Allstate.  We are paying around 700/yr in South Philly for a 58 year old rowhome.  He was actually cheaper than another Allstate agent for an identical policy, which I thought was interesting.  We were actually put in touch with them through our real estate/mortgage broker when we bought the house.  It all depends to on any riders you add, deductible amounts, coverage amounts, etc.

We also received a quote with GEICO, who we have our auto with, and they were more than Allstate, even with the dual policy discount.

    Good luck!

    <-- idiot.

Duh...I missed the liberty mutual post.

    Thanks!

  • Especially since we live in the same own and our houses are the same age, my premium is $750 my deductible is $1000, and it's bundled with our car. Have full replacement cost is really important.
