There was a post on MM that I thought contained kind of a cute idea....and it turned into a little bit of a sh!tstorm (well, by MM standards not too bad of a sh!tstorm)...
http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/59727608.aspx
The rundown: Woman went "mugging" with her Church on Halloween. When people would open the door they'd say "You've been mugged!" and hand them a mug with cocoa in it. It doesn't sound like the Church logo was anywhere on the mug, and it doesn't sound like they stuck around to chat up their Church or anything. People replied that it is offensive, that its annoying that the religion was pushed upon others, and they found it sneaky that they would be tricked into opening their door on Halloween night to find a gift from a Church instead of ToT-ers.
It kind of amazed me that something so seemingly nice and innocuous (sp?) ticked off so many people. But then again, I am Christian, so maybe I'm missing the point.
No, I don't like it when Jehovah's Witnesses are on my doorstep, but I never feel offended or tricked into opening the door. Same thing with the woman who knocked the other night trying to sell me AT&T. But I wouldn't feel tricked into opening my door on Halloween, and to open it in order to receive instead of giving, well...that just seems nice.
I know we tend to be more of a "everyone can get along" board but, can you guys enlighten me as to why this is so offensive? I'm seriously surprised that so many people could find it so rage-inducing. Thoughts?
Re: How would you feel about this?
Wouldn't bother me one bit that it was a church. I wouldn't even care if the church logo was on the mug. The only thing I would be iffy about is drinking cocoa from a stranger, haha. (Was it a packet stuck in the mug for making later? I didn't read the thread. In that case I'd be stoked.)
It just seems like a random act of kindness... that's not offensive to me whatsoever, even if the givers were Buddhists or Mormons or Christians or motorcyclists.
I agree. I would not be bothered or offended.
Random acts of kindness are too few and far between these days.
This!
Our crazy, wonderful life
Yep. I think it's a better tactic than the church here who handed out little pamphlets dealing with sacrificing cats on Satan's birthday. I wish I was kidding.
Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. I've always thought of myself as the "not easily offended" type, just thought some other opinions on this one may enlighten.
