religion/God question (Christianity)

So, I'm Christian, believe the whole God/Jesus business.

I like to listen to KSBJ in with all my other stations.

The songs where they refer to "our God"...

I believe (as do other Christians) that there is one God, creator of all and blah blah blah.   It seems like in referring to "our God", especially in the "How great is our God" sense, one is saying that we need to single out OURS because there are others. There's also the "Our God is an awesome God" one.

Why refer to "ours" when our whole theology rests upon the base of there only being ONE God?

I was just thinking about it in the car earlier, and figured I'd come to the source of all knowledge, the nest, to see what people had to say ; )

Re: religion/God question (Christianity)

  • Because others believe "their" God is the only God?

I don't know, never thought of it before.   I don't think it says that we believe there are other Gods, but we do know that other people do worship whom/what they feel is God but it is not our God they are worshiping, it is a false God.

  • Deep thought....by Jax

I guess because he is OUR (meaning we Christians) God.  Ugh, I don' t know.  I ate too much candy to try and explain this, lol!!!

  • It's "our" in the sense of the Christian community.  Because God is the God of all of us, it wouldn't make sense to sing (in some instances) "my God."  Although there are lots of songs where the intent is the personal relationship with God where you'll here more singular possessive pronouns.

Where most songs are meant to be sung by a congregation setting, you'll just here more use of the word "our."

There are several songs that pop into mind where God is just addressed directly.

  • I think saying OUR God sounds selfish. Surprise

  • To me its really about a personal relationship. God is God, he is everyone's God whether they believe in him or not. When I say our God, I am talking about the personal relationship that I and fellow believers hold. Its not about my God or their God, because I believe there is only 1 God and anything else is simply an Idol.

Our God is the God that I and my brothers and sisters in Christ follow. Just like we say "Our Father", stemming from the Bible which use Our and Their to separate the Christian followers from others. I don't really see how it would be selfish, its really just a distinction between the two.

I think it sounds a little sassy. Like, say "God" as if He is available to everyone... Not like he is only ours. But I can see the personal relationship thing... It just isn't the way I refer to it. We refer to Jesus as Jesus. Not "our" or "my" Jesus. Thanks for thinking deep with me, people!

I tend to agree with this. The church isn't the building, its the people, the community that makes it up. We (as a church, as a people OF God) are praising Him. He is our God....the God of those of us (the body of believers) that worship Him. He is my personal God, my personal Lord and Savior, but in most cases we sing songs as a church...therefore ours instead of just mine.

I think it's as simple as the bolded above.  These songs, especially the two you referenced, are meant to be sung by more than one person and therefore "our" instead of "my".

  • It strikes me as intended to say that God is everyone's God (of course, since I don't believe in "God" as in a supernatural being with whom one can have a personal relationship, but I think that if God, as envisioned by Christians, actually existed, He would be everyone's, whether one is Christian or not).

Me too & it makes me happy!

I take the "Our God" to be a combination of what several people have said.  Worshipping him in Christian fellowship, rejoicing in a personal relationship with him, and he is everyone's God.

And, there are songs that say "My Jesus", for example  Michael W. Smith's "Shout to the Lord".  (Now that's stuck in my head too, love it Smile)

  • You guys are all totally wrong.

It's a total nanny nanny boo boo competition.  Let's be honest.

Ok ok just kidding.  But it is a funny question Jax, because i can see it from that perspective only now that you have asked.  It's like at the foot of the mountain Moses came down to lead the Hebrews in singing, "Our Yahweh is an awesome God and your golden idols can suck it, la la la la!"Music  And now in my imagination I'm picturing a total musical sing off a la "When you're a Jet you're a Jet all the way" from West Side Story.  But since he was banishing false gods he could change it from Jet to Jew.

And cue the lightning. Lightning No one stand close to me today.
