Re: Mums Bumps and BBTs

  • Ups:  I think we are finally over our sicknesses!!  DH still has a nasty cough, but it is mainly at night, not all day.

Downs:  Holy Cow, the need for independance and the tantrums that go with it.  My child is doing my head in and I really wonder how I am going to cope with two.

QOTW:  Well, hand-me-downs of course!!  But also going to toy libraries and regular libraries for that matter.  And free toddler groups or classes.  Parks and walks in the park, feeding the ducks all that typ of free entertainment.

Second hand baby equipment too was a rea gift and nearly new sales are good.

  • Ups: D has been saying more words lately. He finally started saying Bye Bye today while waving, says Up when he wants to be picked up and Papa when he looks at a picture of my dad.

After a looooooooooong battle, his teething is finally finished!! Those stupid canines finally came in, and hopefully his two year molars won't take four freaking months to come in.

We both had a glorious full nights rest last night. I figured out that he doesn't like his mattress (it's a memory foam mattress), so after Christmas, DH and I are going to look into getting him a coil mattress. Sigh.

Downs: D has been the toddler from hell lately while grocery shopping. He pulls things off the shelf into the basket, and screams bloody murder when I put it back. I have to get in and out as fast as possible, which isn't always easy with tons of people standing in the middle of the aisles talking.

QOTW: We keep costs down by buying toys on Ebay, dvds and books on Amazon (less than ?1 each), and all of his clothes/diapers/wipes/toiletries on sale. I hardly ever buy anything at full price, and it's saved us loads. When he's done with something, I donate it to charity for families looking out for bargains.

  • Ups: I had an ultrasound last week and my placenta has moved so I unless other complications arise I should be able to go forward with a natural birth.

Downs: In that same ultrasound the technician remarked that the baby has a large abdomen and will be "nice and fat".  Her abdomen size was just below 95%.  The technician didn't mention anything about the baby's femur size which is below 3% so now after reading through the report I've been panicking that the baby may have some type of dwarfism.  I called the midwife who is a bit of a wackadoo and she told me if the technician didn't say anything I shouldn't worry about it.  Easier said than done.

QOTW: I plan to take advantage of any free activities in the community.  I also hope I can be use my creative skills and games from teaching.

  • Ups: DD had her all clear from her neurosurgeon after her surgery 2 weeks ago so I am happy about that. DS is just fun, as always.

Downs: 5 seems to be the new time for dd to wake up. Every day. I hate it.

For those of you who live in areas with places like zoos, museums, etc for kids I have found it is always, always worth it to get a family membership. You may pay more up front but usually get it back within 2-3 visits.

  • Hi!

Ups: DD is really starting to get social

Downs: We're struggling to transition naps from my arms to her crib, and it's not going well so far. Ferber worked so well for us at night that I was hoping it would be just as easy for the naps. Not so much.

QOTD: Second hand. That's all I've got to say. There are some great second hand baby stores in our area and I am always amazed at how much I can find considering how small the stores are. Oh, and this week Aldi was having a sale on winter jumpsuits and turtle necks starting with DD's size. I stocked up on her size and one up since I figure she'll be in those later this winter. Buy things like diapers and wipes in bulk on sale because, let's face it, you're going to need them.

  • Ups: So far it appears that BabyD's hand foot mouth disease is a milder case. Certainly has rash and spots, but it's spreading very slowly and nothing in the mouth. Hoping it continues to be mild and he can heal quickly.

Downs: HMF disease sucks. Even with a mild case. And it always sucks when your little one is sick.

QOTW: Made baby food when possible. After size 2 diapers, just got generic. Use hand me down clothes when available. Buy things at end of season sales for next year (although can be risky since you dont' know when growth spurts will hit). I wish I had saved my money on the electric pump and stuck with the manual pump and hand expression. Got a convertible crib which meant we didn't have to buy a toddler bed.

  • Ups: DS is talking a lot.

Downs: He's screaming a lot too.

To save money we CD'd, made our own baby food and didn't(don't) go crazy with the toys.

  • Ups: M is now crawling, clapping, cruising as fast as she can all around our house, is happy as Larry and has taken 3 steps on her own. W loved Halloween and is great.

DOwns: DH is away all week and W chose today to boycot naps and this afternoon has been awful. I hope i'ts not a precedent.

QOTW: hand-me-downs, buying on sale in advance, charity/consignment shops, libraries, CDs, etc - most of what people have said.

frcib that's great news about L - must be a huge relief :)

    Mum to W (4) and M (nearly 2)
  • Ups:  31 weeks today!  We had an awesome appointment last night.  LO is measuring 2 weeks ahead, and is in the 90th %tile for everything- the doctor said he is totally healthy, just big.  Hooray!  We also talked about the fact that I might be having a c-section, and it would probably be either 38 or 39 weeks.  I will be going to talk to a doctor at the hospital here where I would deliver at 35 weeks.  But, if we do this at 38 or 39 weeks, DH and I will be parents next month!

Downs:  Not really any to report.  Oh, LO's furniture was picked up at my stepmother's house  on Thursday, for shipment.  I got an email from my stepmom on Sunday that the movers left a piece of the crib in her house.  Blragh!  We worked it out with the shipping company that they will ship the piece, but it will arrive a few weeks after the rest of the furniture.  I don't think we'll have the nursery complete before LO gets here :(

QOTW:  We have received so many hand-me-downs from parents of kids at my school.  One family even gave us their beautiful stroller!  We'll still have to get something smaller and more managable for me when I'm alone with LO, but this still saved us a bunch of money.

  •  Ups? Started to feel baby move in the last week. Getting little kicks now.. such an amazing feeling!

Downs? Still dealing with nausea at times. I just want it to be over with already (the nausea that is)

QOTW: What have you done or will you do to try to keep costs down with your DD or DS? We are trying to find used for anything that we can. If we don't get it as a gift that means we first look for used. Friends have also offered baby clothing for newborns that they no longer need, and a another friend offered her Cloth diapers.

  • Ups:  DS finally has his top teeth. I love that he is finally understanding what we say and will do things when asked.  (sometimes)

Down:  DS finally has his top teeth.  He is still breastfed and hasn't gotten used to his teeth so feeding hurts.  He also still sleeps in our bed and will only fall asleep while breastfeeding.   I want him to be able to fall asleep on his own and in his crib, but have no idea how to go about it.

QOTW: I love hand-me-downs.  I buy clothes for him at the end of season clearances.  We cloth diaper during the day.  It's much more costly up front but definitely worth it over time.  Do free activities (library, park, etc.)  I tried to make my own baby food at first but gave him some packet stuff and then he refused my food.  Thankfully he's off baby food now so that expense is gone.  Try to buy wipes on sale and in bulk.

  • Hi ladies!

Ups: DD is happy and "talking" a bunch.

Downs: She's not big on the stroller or falling asleep in the carrier on my Mum at the moment, it has to be me or DH so our shopping trip on Monday ended with me trying on shoes with baby on me, oh what fun!

QOTW: We CD, use cloth wipes, use as much second hand things as possible. If we get new clothes we get them from H&M, good quality and low price.

  • Ups: 29w2d now! Still feeling good and still able to work out. I can't believe that I'm almost 3/4 of the way through!

Downs: I think I'm getting a stretch mark. My mom says that she never got any, so I was hoping I would be spared. After Googling pictures of stretch marks, I'm freaked out and quite positive that I'm going to end up looking like a red and white zebra. I know it isn't the end of the world, but it would have been nice not to get any.

QOTW: We are still contemplating cloth diapering - ultimately, it depends on which daycare we get accepted into and if they allow cloth diapers. In my mind, I am going to make all of LO's food. In reality, that may or may not seem like a good idea when I have to find time to do it.

  • Chelbel, I'm sure everything will be fine!

Ups: I'm still generally feeling good and I'm starting to feel him move in a different way than before. Instead of only feeling little kicks, I feel rolls and pushes, like a head rubbing up against my stomach. It's so cool, but I wish I new exactly what I'm feeling. A foot? An elbow? A back?

Downs: I think I've had a growth spurt and my hips and lower back are taking the brunt of it. Oh well.

QOTW: Good tips above! I hope to breast feed and make my own baby food. I also thankfully already have a ton of hand me downs to get me through the first six months.
