Wanna do a Health and Fitness Challenge?

Anyone want to do a health and fitness challenge for the rest of 2011? Maybe we could do a check-in poll every Monday? The poll could include our exercise/eating schedule for the week, any successes from the previous week, any struggles or problems, AWs, confessions, etc. We could all come up with goals that we want to reach by the end of the year (lose x pounds, stick to a certain exercise/training plan, count calories, NROLFW, C25K, Crossfit, etc.) Maybe this could help us get through the holidays without gaining a few pounds Smile

We can start today since it's Monday! And anyone can feel free to start the polls on Mondays, you don't have to wait for me to start it. And you can revise the questions if anyone wants to add/change something.

Goal(s) for the rest of 2011:

Health and Fitness plan for the week:

Recent H&F AWs:

Recent H&F Struggles:

Any new, helpful tips or discoveries:

Anything else you'd like to add?

Re: Wanna do a Health and Fitness Challenge?

  • Goal(s) for the rest of 2011: Stick to my Half Marathon training plan, try to count calories, lose 6 pounds.

Health and Fitness plan for the week:

M: Rest. T: Speedwork run. W: Arms/Shoulders strength training. Th: 3 mile run. F: Legs/Back strength training. Sat: 7.5 mile run. Su: Rest.

Recent H&F AWs: I ran 6.5 miles yesterday! It's the longest run so far and I was surprised how well it turned out.

Recent H&F Struggles: The list is long. 1) Today is food day and I can't keep myself from going in the kitchen every 30 minutes to get more food. 2) All this Halloween candy!!! 3.) Finding the motivation to actually do a whole week of my training plan (I always seem to skip at least one day) 4.) Because of food day, I'm not even going to attempt to count calories today.

Any new, helpful tips or discoveries: I usually don't listen to music when I run (I'm paranoid someone will sneak up behind me and I won't be able to hear them.) But last week, I ran in a very populated area so I listened to pandora on my run. I never realized how distracting music can be! It was wonderful.

Anything else you'd like to add?

  • Yes! I want to!

Goal(s) for the rest of 2011: Lose 1-2 pounds every week. CrossFit at least 3 times a week.

Health and Fitness plan for the week: CrossFit Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Go to WW meeting Tuesday night.

Recent H&F AWs: Ummm... none. I only worked out ONCE last week and my eating lately has sucked.

Recent H&F Struggles: My struggle has ALWAYS been eating sweets in the evening. I always want ice cream after dinner. I really want to break this "habit."

Any new, helpful tips or discoveries: Not yet!

Anything else you'd like to add? I have sucked lately at being healthy. And Halloween hasn't helped. No more holiday excuses! I'm ready to get this baby weight OFF my body.

    That's amazing Kaylee! Great job!

  • Count me in! Goal(s) for the rest of 2011: Continue C25K and incorporate some weights on my days off. Make running a habit 3 days a week. If I can start losing some weight, so much the better. 15 stupid lbs would make a world of difference on my frame...I'm so tired of saying that. Health and Fitness plan for the week: C25K today, Weds, and Fri. Free weights Tues and Thurs.
Recent H&F AWs: I had a lovely little runner's high after Friday's run. Felt fantastic!
Recent H&F Struggles: Not talking myself out of running on some days. I have a sweet tooth, too.
Any new, helpful tips or discoveries: Um....if your feet are going numb, it's probably because you laced your shoelaces too tight. Ha!
Anything else you'd like to add? Nothing I can think of...
  • I'm probably going to be the weakest link, but I'll to try. Does anyone go to Aspen at Penn Square, by any chance?

Goal(s) for the rest of 2011: Go to the gym at least 3x/week. Work on mostly cardio. Would LOVE to lose 10lbs. Long-term, would love to lose 30.

Health and Fitness plan for the week: Umm, I have no plan. Embarrassed Today, I won't do anything, b/c H and I have plans tonight. Great start, right? I need to think about this more.

Recent H&F AWs: Absolutely none. :( I have totally fallen off the wagon.

Recent H&F Struggles: 1) Work moved downtown, making gym visits a lot more difficult to fit in. 2) I've been in a crappy mental state lately. TTC seems to be going no where (we've only been trying 3 months, but I'm impatient), the house hunt is on hold, work has been super stressful, and I'm unhappy about being out of shape. When I get down in the dumps, it's really tough to talk myself into going to the gym OR eating anything healthy.

Any new, helpful tips or discoveries: None - I've been absent from the H&F world for a good 3-4 months now.

Anything else you'd like to add? I used to be good at lifting weights, but now I can't seem to figure out where to start. I always used the machines before, but from what I've learned about body weight exercises and free weights, I'd rather do it that way. The problem is, I really don't know what I'm doing. This sounds dumb, but my insecurity about it leads to me not doing weights at all, which leads me to feeling like my cardio time is pointless, which leads me to not going to the gym, ever. :( It's a vicious cycle, folks. Any tips would be appreciated.

  • Thanks Blinking!

McGil - Have you looked at www.bodybuilding.com? They have free weightlifting plans. You just click "Find a plan", pick your sex, age, and goal (fat loss or muscle building.) It creates a weekly plan that includes cardio, weight training, and rest days. Making exercise a habit seems to be the hardest part. I find it helpful to have a plan set out for the week. You could also look into NROLFW.

And btw, this challenge can be for ANYONE. Even if your goals are small. We're competing against ourselves, not each other!

  • Goal(s) for the rest of 2011: I'd like to lose ten pounds

Health and Fitness plan for the week:

Quit sneaking that one cig a day.  Bring my leftover Halloween candy to work.  Install new batteries in the Wii Fit so I'll use it.

Recent H&F AWs: I'm trying to quit smoking and have significantly cut down.

Recent H&F Struggles: I love to eat and the cooler temps make eating seem so comforting.

Any new, helpful tips or discoveries: No, but hopefully I'll have some soon.

Goals: Finish Turkey Trot in 40 or under, lose 12 pounds Plan: Run twice, Zumba twice, two weight training sessions AW: I've lost everything I gained with baby girl! On to pre-DS weight. :) Struggles: Battling PPD makes me not hungry (meds) but I eat junk to keep my milk supply up and feel terrible. It's a cycle. Tips: love WW nursing moms program It's worth it. I lost a bunch of weight before DS and I know it's worth every second. Keep on keepin' on.

  • Goal(s) for the rest of 2011: Lose seven pounds to make it to my next "mini goal."Health and Fitness plan for the week: Run 2x. Horseback riding/barn work 3x.Recent H&F AWs: I've been working on slowly losing weight over the past year--I've heard the slower you lose it, the more-likely you'll be able to keep it off. It's nice to see the scale going down.Recent H&F Struggles: I gained back two pounds since I started my new job. I got sick, stopped working out, and was eating like crap. But now that I'm finally getting into the swing of things, I think I'll hopefully start seeing the downward momentum again.Any new, helpful tips or discoveries: Not really, except listen to your body and don't overdo it. With the weather getting cooler, I have to be especially careful of this when I'm running outside as the cold affects my asthma AND makes my bad foot get very stiff and injury-prone.Anything else you'd like to add? Getting sick sucks. Six weeks ago I could run 4 miles. Now I run 5 minutes and I'm huffing like crazy. I can't believe what a difference it made being sedentary for once month.

  • Goal(s) for the rest of 2011: Start working out on a regular basis again. I also want to lose the little pudge I have over my jeans and work on becoming more limber. Oh and I really need work on my sit-ups for my fit test.

Health and Fitness plan for the week: I checked out the body building website, so I guess I'll start there I'm going to do the 12 week plan it pulled up but only 10 weeks since Ill be in China for the last two and I'm only going to get cardio done while I'm there if you know what I mean.

Recent H&F AWs: I got nothing

Recent H&F Struggles: My work schedule has really got me exhausted. I'm hoping that since FC is over for the season I can get on track. I have to help clean up this week and then I should have more free time.

Any new, helpful tips or discoveries: Nope

  • Dang girl! 6.5 miles!! You're awesome! :) Great job!
  • Goal(s) for the rest of 2011:  Lose 1-2 lbs/week the rest of the year.  There are 8 weeks until Christmas, so I'm hoping to lose another 10 lbs by then.  We'll see.Health and Fitness plan for the week:  Stick to my WW points, eat lots of fruits and veggies!  And I have GOT to start drinking more water!  I chugged water all day while pregnant and now.....yeah, not so much.Recent H&F AWs:  Last week I reached the double digit mark of weight loss since re-joining WW in September :)Recent H&F Struggles:  I have absolutely no time to work out and that frustrates me.  Any new, helpful tips or discoveries:  For me, having small goals really helps.  I get really overwhelmed/discouraged thinking about how I have 40 lbs total to lose, but when I break it up into 5, 10, and 15 lb goals it seems more attainable.Anything else you'd like to add?  I'm really sad I let myself gain so much weight while pregnant---that's more of a confession, but I wanted to add it Stick out tongue

  • I want to join the challenge!

Goal(s) for the rest of 2011: finish through stage 4 of NROLFW, kick H's butt on our hiking trip next month!

Health and Fitness plan for the week: lift weights Tuesday and Saturday, swim Friday and Sunday

Recent H&F AWs: I'm halfway through stage 3 of NROLFW.  I've been able to add more weight or do a few extra reps on some exercises. I've managed to consistently get myself to the gym 4 days a week on average for the past few months. I never saw myself as someone who enjoyed going to the gym, but I somehow am!

Recent H&F Struggles: I've eaten out a lot this past week or two and eaten a lot of junk at home. Breakfast has been a handful or two of cereal lately rather than yogurt, toast, fruit, eggs, etc. so my tummy's grumbling by 9am.

Any new, helpful tips or discoveries: Find an activity you enjoy doing, so exercise isn't something you "have" to do, but rather something you want to do. I couldn't spend an hour on the treadmill, elliptical, or stairmaster, but I can easily spend an hour lifting weights or walking the dogs.

Anything else you'd like to add? We're going to be the healthiest local board by the end of the year!

  • Goal(s) for the rest of 2011:  lose 9 lbs

Health and Fitness plan for the week:  I'm hoping to go walking/running while the bigs are in school this week and I started WW Thursday so I want to stick to that too

Recent H&F AWs:  I weigh what I weighed when I got married now.  I'm feeling close enough to my ultimate goal (the one I set for myself the first time I lost weight that I met) that I might actually be able to get there

Recent H&F Struggles:  I like to eat.  A lot.  I get bored at night and want to eat.  I've got to figure something out!

  • Goal(s) for the rest of 2011:

    • Finish through Stage 2 of NROLFW. I'm halfway through Stage 1 right now.
    • Run at least one, possibly two, 5ks. I'm looking at the Turkey Trot and/or a run near Christmas in Ft. Worth.
    • I wouldn't mind losing 8 pounds, that would bring me to my HS grad weight. Not bad for 12 1/2 years later. With the weight lifting and muscle building that may not happen, though.

Health and Fitness plan for the week: I was at the gym this morning, did my NROLFW workout. I plan to do the same Thursday. I would like to get a run in at some point, but that may not happen. I'm OOT this weekend, so I probably won't do much then.

    Recent H&F AWs:

    • I've been able to consistently up my weight every workout or so with NROLFW.
    • I can do all my reps of the prone jacknife without falling off the ball now. :)
    • I was OOT last week and I actually did my workout in the hotel gym. I had to improvise since they didn't have all the equipment, but I did it.

Recent H&F Struggles: I often feel like I just don't have enough time. I work two jobs and have quite a few volunteer commitments, especially in the past few weeks. I haven't been able to get to the gym as often as I like, and I haven't ran at all in 2-3 weeks. Sadly, I don't see this changing until my job/commute situation changes.

Any new, helpful tips or discoveries: I probably sound like an ad, but I love NROLFW. It was hard the first couple of times to go over to the (mostly) guys side of the gym with the weights, but it is so worth it. I feel like such a badass. I used to just use the machines in the gym, and this is so much better.

  • I would love to do this! I may not be able to post every week because we still don't have internet at our house. I haven't been able to post on my phone.

Goal(s) for the rest of 2011: Lose 1-2 pounds a week (at least 10 more by the end of the year), gain muscle (not bulky but look more fit)

Health and Fitness plan for the week: Work out everyday except Sunday. A friend and I are doing P90X. Eat within my calorie limit. Drink more water.

Recent H&F AWs: I have lost 9.4 lbs so far. This is our 6th week of P90X.

Recent H&F Struggles: I love food! The first few weeks it was super easy to stay within my calorie range. It has become super hard lately. I want to eat everything I see.

Any new, helpful tips or discoveries: Not really.

Anything else you'd like to add? Not this time.

  • Any new, helpful tips or discoveries:  Have any of you heard of stickk.com?  I just found the site today.  Basically, you sign up and set a goal (lose x number of pounds, exercise, quit smoking, pay off debt, etc.).  Then, you have the option to donate money to a random charity, a charity you're opposed to, or another person if you do not meet your goal.

Is anyone interested in doing a challenge with eachother where if you do not meet your goal you send money to the other person?  The challenge is calculated weekly, so you can do as little as $1 per week.  It is all done within the site, so I don't think there is any risk involved as far as trusting an internet stranger to send you money.

Let me know if anyone is interested.
