Re: Interesting and Informative Article On Miscarriages - MUST READ!

  • I know this wasn't the case for me, but it is interesting info.

    One more Jenn

  • Yeah, it seems like the amount of cases is pretty small, but it's still good to know.

    And, I DID IT! Party!!!

  • I didn't get a chance to read the whole thing, but a co-worker had a doctor insistent on scheduling a D&C for her. She told the doctor that she could schedule it but she wouldn't show up and the only way she'd show up was if she was forcibly removed from her home. She knew in her heart the baby was ok and that the doc was wrong and that a few more weeks would prove that.

Her daughter just turned 16 :-)

  • I do think many docs wait for a repeat scan.  I wasn't given an option to end the pregnancy until my repeat scan confirmed no growth.

Melissa - so glad your friend listened to her gut!

On top of that, my friend had to have a hysterectomy so that ended up being her only shot. That horrible doc is still practicing here so I made sure that's not who I got when I changed practices.

Of course, her daughter now rolls her eyes every time her mom refers to her as her "miracle baby." :-)

  • This happened to a friend of a friend within the last year or so. She was told that the pregnancy wasn't viable--it was more than once. She was devastated, but switched doctors for some reason. I think she wanted a second opinion and went for another ultrasound somewhere else, just to confirm it for herself before going in for a D&C. Sure enough, they found a heartbeat.
  • Reading this article makes me that much more happy with my OB.  Although my end result was an actual m/c, my OB was one of the apparent few who acted on the far side of caution.  I had 2 u/s & 3 blood draws before my m/c was given a definite diagnosis, and I was still given the option to wait a while longer for a natural m/c or the D&C.  It was a long, drawn-out process, and at the time the waiting was really tough to deal with, but I think being able to pass everything naturally actually gave me some closure with the whole ordeal.

This makes me think about a friend of mine who recently had a D&C.  She went to the ER with spotting, had one u/s where they didn't find a fetal pole, despite a positive urine test, and then only had one baseline HCG level blood draw.  She had a D&C two days later.  This kind of article really makes you think...

  • This is an interesting article. Like Emma it makes me really appreciate my doc. I had an ultrasound and repeated blood work. Then he still encouraged a natural miscarriage. It wasn't until my difficulty miscarrying resulted in a trip to the ER and some troubling blood work did he recommend the D&C. It helped me feel better about my decision and it gave me the reassurance I needed.
  • I also know someone this happened to.  She insisted on waiting it out and ended up having a healthy baby girl.  Based on cases like this, I think I'd be more inclined to wait for a natural m/c rather than to do a d&c.

I really think it's a personal decision.  By my second scan, I was 4 weeks past the dates the baby stopped growing and my body showed NO signs of eviction. I would have been an even more emotional wreck if I continued to wait for a natural miscarriage.
