How was everyone's Halloween?
Is it just me or are kids slacking on the costumes? I had one group of kids that came around three times (before I finally told them to try a different street). None were in costume and one informed me, while showing me the cast on his arm, that his costume was "robber that had been beaten up by an old lady"
Really?
Re: Halloween: The Day After
I was pretty disappointed by the turnout-we got very few groups (and I am pretty sure we got one group of boys twice-once with masks and once without...)
One kid complained about my selection-I told him it was free and he didn't need to take any if he didn't like it!
We definitely had some cuties too! This one little girl knocked on the door and was all like, "Trick or treat smell my feet" it was great!
Almost everyone on our block had their lights out so I figure the kids skip our block all together
...
It was nice though 'cuz DH & BIL decided they wanted cheesesteaks for dinner so I didn't have to cook!
We didn't hand out candy because we weren't home so I don't know how many kids came to our house since were trick or treating with the kids. We left a bowl out on our porch though and there was still quite a bit of candy left in it when we got home at the end of the night.
I was surprised at the amount of people who were not giving out candy this year. Maybe because it was a week night but I would say where we go, only half of the usual amount of houses were giving out candy. I also didn't see all that many trick or treaters out, either. We were out around 6:30-8:30ish so maybe everyone went earlier because of it being a school night? It just didn't feel like Halloween last night for some reason.
Agreed, last night just didn't feel like Halloween. Maybe it was Saturday's snow?
I also was amazed to find out that Milk Duds were the "candy of choice" last night. No other candy received praises of "Ohhhhhh! Insert Name of Candy Here!" other than the Duds. I told DH when he got home, because he hates them, and he didn't believe me. But as fate should have it, I got one more trick-or-treater that night that voiced her excitement for the caramel and chocolate candy and DH was there to witness!
I had a craving for Milk Duds last night but the Dollar Tree that I stopped at didn't have any and I didn't feel like making any more stops so I supplemented with Dark Choco Covered Raisinets.
We also put a basket out because our front steps are under construction. It was actually kind of nice not having to keep getting up off the couch and deal with the barking dog scaring all the little kids. However, some punk took our basket.
Re: costumes and complaining - I am amazed at how every year more kids are coming not in costume and how more kids are complaining about the selection and/or asking if they can have more than I give them.
I also give the sideye to parents that bring their babies out to collect candy. If you want candy, go buy your own bag of Snickers.

We had about 30-40 kids total. Last year we had zero so it was amazing. I will say that everyone was dressed up which was nice and everyone said thank you.
However we had someone ring our doorbell at 948. Our house was pitch dark but we left our outdoor light on. However to ring our door bell you have to open our screen door and you can see right into a dark dark house. So that was annoying. Pay peaked out and it was an adult with a tween and a teenager. Not cool.
I don't think that it's necessarily so that they can stay out later but I guess it would be the issue of there still being school the next day.
I know for me, Halloween on a weekday is really hectic because I have to drive home like a maniac after work like everyone else, shove dinner down our faces, get the kids dressed and then rush out to start at a reasonable time. We don't even usually eat dinner every night before 8:00 so to do all that and be done ToTing all before 8 and get the kids back in bed for school the next morning at a reasonable hour is almost impossible for me. (I'm not really complaining here... just saying that when it's on a weekday, it sucks.)
Doesn't the governor have bigger things to worry about rather than when kids are going to go trick or treating?
The kids in P'vill represented well. The only babies I saw were with older kids. We took our littles out but Brooks really enjoyed handing people his pumpkin and getting something. But what he REALLY enjoyed was handing out candy. For 45 minutes we sat at the front door and he handed out candy. He was a big hit.
Blasphemy!
I can see weeknight Halloweens being hectic if you are getting kids ready after work and taking them around for candy, but to me, it's gotta be October 31st.
Right! Even with all of the running around like a maniac, it just wouldn't be right not being on the 31st. That's why I'm not sure how I feel about it just yet. I doubt it would happen though.
We had a good turn out-- we went through about 3 bags of candy. All the kids, even the teens were polite. I did have one adult show up with a plastic shopping bag and said it was for his son that couldn't be there...??
We turned out our light a little after 8 because I had to feed the monster. At 8:30 someone frantically pounded on our door. I thought it might have been a neighbor who needed something, but it turned out to be some d bag teenagers who demanded candy.
Hunter was dressed as an owl, of course

This was our first Halloween in the house and I was really surprised by the amount of kids. We went through three bags in about 30 minutes and then we were out. I didn't want to overbuy since I didn't know how many kids we would get. There were still more kids even after we went in about 6:50. I would say the kids were out from around from about 6 to 8. We have a charter middle school/high school around the corner and some of the teens who were around 14-15ish came around in their uniforms with their backpacks open for candy. Seriously? The kids without the costumes and a plastic bag totally annoy me. I did notice a lot of kids sans costume that were very young.
However, all of the kids, costume or not, all said thank you, and some of the parents said thank you as well. It's nice to know people still have manners.
DH stayed home to give out candy while I took Ais around the corner to TOT at a few houses. He said we got about 50 kids throughout the night, which is pretty good considering that on our entire huge block we were one of only 4 houses giving out.
I did have a couple of people joke to me that it must be nice to have a baby to bring around so that I could get candy. I made sure to tell them that my kid actually does like candy (seriously), so I wouldn't get to snack on too much. I also only took her out for a half hour to maybe 15 houses tops, and made sure to thank everyone and have her wave bye.
Our neighborhood packs it in around 8pm. I don't know if that was a school night issue or just people are done or what, but I don't remember being home so early growing up. I will say, however, that I went to Catholic school so we always had Nov. 1 off...so maybe that plays a part.
Maybe there is hope for the school district after all
Seriously-a few years ago a minivan full of adults that WERE NOT dressed up pulled up to the house to come ToTing-it was weird!
HW, where I grew up we never ToT on Halloween. In fact, it's not even at night. It's quite sad! Our township and neighboring townships have it on the Sunday before from 2-5. They won't even do it at night -- not sure what the reasons are, but I remember as a small child it being from 5-8 but I think there was too many issues out in cowpoke with teens getting wild. My high school also takes charter buses the prom because there were too many incidents with prom night drinking and driving.
It's insane. When we lived in Allentown, they did it the Friday night before Halloween. I was actually confused when I moved down here and was like - what? ToT on Halloween? Never heard of it! With that said, it's my favorite holiday so I am a huge proponent of it being on the actual holiday. It's just more festive to me.
The only thing that kind of annoys me about Philly Halloween though is what time it starts -- there's not really a set time and kids start at like 4:00 and then don't end until after 9. I'm usually not even home until 6:30. DH and I had a wardrobe emergency mall trip and saw kids out with parents after 10 as we came home. We're usually not grinches... this year was the first we didn't give out any candy and it was so sad.
