*Rugby* and others who have kids who skate
How old were your kids when they started? DH and I want to get Evan comfortable on ice at a young age but I don't know what age they should start.
Any tips?

Re: *Rugby* and others who have kids who skate
We will start Sawyer on the ice once he can run. They have skates for that small and he will be on the ice as soon as possible. Hockey will be in his life as long as his dad works where he works.
I think it all depends on the family. My stepkids have been on the ice at a very little age and whenever they don't have school, they are with DH at work skating on the ice with Coach's kid.
Some of your great hockey players have been skating since 3. Sidney Crosby has been playing since he was 3 but started shooting a puck in his parent's basement at 2.
N - That's the goal...to get him into hockey as a life long sport. My dad played when we lived in MN and DH played a bit in ND. I think he regrets not pursuing it more but it's just so expensive!
Do the complexes do rentals or do we need to buy new skates all the time?

I think the learn to skate classes are for 3 and up. They have rentals available.
They have rentals and I know that O.M.A.H.A. Hockey in the fall does consignment sales of hockey gear.
and Kicks N Sticks on 117th & Blondo is a good store to go to.
So yeah, if that is your goal, then get him in soon and then involved in O.M.A.H.A. Once he gets good enough, he can try out for select hockey teams which does some traveling.
And really, as much skating as you can get him in the better.
Chiming in here as a figure skater myself growing up.
I always wished I had started skating earlier but my parents didn't start me until I expressed interest in it (which was around 10-11) and it does get expensive fast!
I know a few skaters that started around 3 years old that now dislike skating since their parents forced them to go. And I also know a few that love it and coach now.
Speaking on the hockey side: you could always talk to the hockey leagues in your area and find out what their norms are for the kids skating for them and what they suggest.
My husband was a hockey player. When we have kids we would love to have them skate regularly but wont force them until they express interest in it .
